While booting a Dell PowerEdge r720, UEFI crashes, making it mostly unbootable. This exception occurs after pressing F2 to get to "F2 System Setup" which means getting to the menu to switch back to BIOS boot mode is NOT possible. Using the F11 boot menu gives lets me get to the LifeCycle Controller or successfully boot the OS. The OS seems to work fine once launched, but cannot get to the part of the LifeCycle Controller to switch to BIOS boot only.

The R720 had booted successfully several times after adding an unsupported "Dell EMC Boot Optimized Server Storage" card, aka Dell BOSS-s1. The BOSS is a much simpler version of the HighPoint SSD7103 RAID card. Two M.2 slots and a Marvel RAID controller to create a RAID1 mirror if desired. The purpose of these cards to is to boot the OS using solid state and to free up the spinning platters for virtual machines or other data. Conceptually they are very simple, but not officially supported until the R740 and other 14th generation hardware. Essentially, a SATA RAID controller with two M.2 slots on a PCI card, so nothing too complicated.

Can the Dell Boss-s1 with SATA SSD Drives be used to boot up a Dell R720?

Have a HP p822 RAID controller with FirmWare 8.32 cabled to a HPE d2600 with 12 x 4TB SATA drives in RAID60. These are not dual-port SAS drives, but 4TB SATA drives so there is only one pathway to each drive. With either one or two miniSAS cables, there is a redundancy warning:

"799 Logical Drive 7 is degraded due to the loss of a redundant path."

How can i disable this warning such that the amber warning light is not "Crying Wolf?"

SATA Drives are HP ATA MB4000ECWLR with firmware HPG4.

Turns out pressing F2 to disable the warning at boot-up does in fact work, but is there a better way, preferably in the HP Smart Storage Administrator or hpssacucli?

In a single browser window, Google Cloud Shell only lets me have one instance that is not corrupt. Screenshots explain. Is there something one can do using Firefox 57 Quantum on Windows 10 or Firefox ESR 52.5.0 on CentOS6 to have multiple google cloud shells that are actually useable? Resizing text in one "tab" may fix corruption in that tab at the cost of corrrupting the other tab.

HP p822 (four external minisas ports) to pair of d2700s Storage Enclosures. Two ports on the p822 are unused.

The partitioning is not at all identical. The top box has four different logical drives and the bottom box is one single drive for backups.

Upon bootup and initialization of the p822, i get an error that may implicate the path from Port 3E of the p822:

Google Apps gsync wanted to remove all the members of a particular group, lets call it FailingGroupName even though ADUC GUI lists a long list of members.

Get-AdGroup FailingGroupName -Properties * returns .member, .memberOf, and members.

The working groups have entries in both .member and .members.

The non-working group FailingGroupName has no entries in .member.

Get-AdGroupMember FailingGroupName returns all the members of the group.

Should i just set $FailingGroup.member = $FailingGroup.members?

Have an ongoing problem with WiFi RDP clients being disconnected while stationary and much more often when roaming. The experience is much like being hacked or denial-of-service. The PineApple took those WiFi hacking attempts and made them easy and cheap.

The Ubiquiti UniFi "Rogue Access Point" report claims there are rogue access points using our SSID. These are not just known and unknown neighbouring access points, but APs using our same WiFi SSID names. The UniFi software does not provide a list of all legitimate MAC addresses associated with all the SSIDs in use. Each access point has several different MAC addresses - the physical ethernet ports plus one MAC for each SSID hosted on the AP. The same SSID on another AP would have a different MAC. The bottom line is that a simple WiFi installation may easily have 100 different electronic serial numbers and UniFi does not provide a view of all of them.

There are various reasons in our case that i do not believe there is actually a hacking attempt using a hidden malicious PineApple or compromised TabletPC with malicious WiFi code:
1. When i power off all the APs, all the wLans / SSIDs disappear. Yes, the PineApple could certainly be smart enough to stop rebroadcasting as soon as the legitimate access points disappear, but i doubt it. I would be more convinced if UniFi provided the list of all the legitimate MAC addresses.
2. Disconnects occur for our TabletPCs with WiFi client certificates that only connect via certificates. Yes, i heard there is a way around this as well. Not sure what that entails, but would think that would take much more work like compromising a CA.
3. At night when the building is less occupied, the same RDP session will stay up while roaming or stationary.
4. There are so many other possible reasons for these TCP disconnects, but want to focus this question on the mechanism that UniFi uses to determine a rogue and if it does anything in response to detecting a rogue.

If the UniFi detected rogue access points by communicating over a backchannel hardware vLan only the list of legitimate MAC addresses and then a way to poke each of the broadcasting SSIDs for legitimacy from another AP, then it could have some form of PineApple detection and then defense (in some cases) by disconnecting the detected malicious AP. It would explain why our RDP clients lose connection.

Our XenServer 6.5 hosts connect over ethernet to shared SAS storage via a single Linux based HP DL360 G6 "bridge". This single StorageServer bridges ethernet to SAS and shares out via an iSCSI daemon.

3x HP DL380 G6 <---> Ethernet<-->HP DL 360 G6 with HP p411 SAS RAID card<---mini SAS cables --->Two HP d2700 SAS enclosures <--> dual port SAS drives.

Can we add a second DL 360 with p411 (other cards not ruled out) to get Active/Active pathways from the XEN hosts to the iSCSI/SAS dual port drives?
Not only to increase redundancy but also increase performance.

Is Citrix XenServer really smart enough to limit which hosts talks to the LVM such that the same LVM is not accessed by two different channels?

Even if XEN is that smart, how would the RAID cards in two different servers coordinate rebuilds of the arrays when drives go bad?

XenServer 6.5 is based on RHEL / CentOS 5. Device Mapper compatibility is listed in /usr/share/doc/device-mapper-multipath-0.X.Y/multipath.conf.defaults. This file in CentOS6.7 mentions the big brothers to the d2700 such as the P2000 G3 and the MSA2012i among others. multipath.conf.defaults does NOT list the d2700 nor d2600.

Performed the latest Citrix XEN Server 6.2 updates, skipping anything related to 6.5. Everything seemed normal after fixing GrubConf.py except that a few random Windows Servers would not start. XenCenter failing machine log tab mentions "Error: This operation could not be performed because the specified virtual disk could not be found."

The virtual hard disk for the non-booting machines resides on a LVM over iSCSI disk. Confirmed that other virtual machines that use this same iSCSI disk were booting ok. Worried because we have had problems with our ethernet to SAS bridging machine and back-to-back extended power outages.

Turn off mount count fsck seems to succeed:

But listing out via

tune2fs -l /dev/sda1 shows mount count is set back to 1 for /dev/sda1 and /dev/md0.

i only want automatic file system checks on the software raid device, not the member drives, but it keeps going back on for the member drives.

In a Linux Software raid, what is the best practice for periodically having the filesystems checked? With single drive or hardware raid, tune2fs -c 5 -i 1w /dev/sda1 means check the filesystem every 5 mounts or if it has been a week or more since the last mount.

But in mdadm land, there are are at least three devices that could be checked in four ways:

1. echo check > /sys/block/md0/md/sync_action
2. tune2fs -c 5 -i 1w /dev/md0
3. tune2fs -c 5 -l 1w /dev/sdal
4. tune2fs -c 5 -l 1w /dev/sdb1

I am thinking i only want to automatically do #1 and #2. Never ever do check the physical drives directly. man md says it is not always abnormal for the physical drives to have different data because sometimes it does not matter.

A good practice is to stress the bare-metal parts of a harddrive a few times in the first 90 days. The goal is not necessarily a filesystem test, but a hardware stress test, hence e2fsck -v -f -c -c -D -C 0 /dev/md1. This manually run forced fs check reads and writes the entire fs and orders it alphabetically while printing verbose output to stdout. md is smart enough to setup RAID across disparate harddrives, but is it smart enough to manage the badblocks list separately for each drive member? Would doing the above e2fsck upon software raid /dev/md0 mark badblocks on both drives even though a badblock exists on just one drive?

Should the member drives ( /dev/sdX ) have the same or different UUIDs as the RAID drive ( /dev/mdY ) ? If the same, it is easy to find all the members of a raid set. But if the same, tune2fs based e2fsck gets registered for both the physical member drives and software raid.

Using the website https://console.developers.google.com, i have tried unsuccessfully to fire up an instance on the google compute engine cloud. It stopped and started just fine months ago, but every attempt since, i have not been able to restart it.

Trying to safely retrieve files from heavily infected Windows XP and 2003 machines that came to us from an acquisition. I have a similar need for automating a script that would run on PXE booted DRBL machines to rsync to our server.

The following code results in single quotes wrapping the entire '--filter=''' parameter to rsync. Note echo strips the single quotes, but not rsync. What am i doing wrong? Would making every parameter an entry in an array help?

Need a one-time backup of two old messy Windows XP machines because of a company split. Using CentOS 6 x64 minimal install, i mounted some MS Windows NTFS harddrives installed locally via ntfs3g and over the LAN via smb. i need to self document what is backed up and thought there would be no better way than scripting everything done with rsync.

The problem is that almost all of the SOURCE folders have spaces in their name. The man page for rsync seems to indicate it supports only multiple source files, not multiple source folders. So i thought "easy enough", create a list and pass each source folder one-at-a-time to rsync.

I do not want to glob because it needs to be clear exactly what was intended to be backed up. i also tried comma and colon separating the folder names, but that did not work either. What is the reliable way to handle this? Switch to perl or python? Please do not tell me to use robocopy.exe as i have used it for years and found it to differ so much between versions of windows, it is less reliable. Besides, i am never going back to Windows.

On a Server 2008 R2 member server I schedule chkdsk to check drives C: and N:. Only the results for the N: drive are seen in event viewer. In previous Windows Servers, chkdsk results for drive C: appeared in event viewer. Is that still the case or is there another reason why I'm not seeing chkdsk's results in event viewer? There is no boot log to be seen either.

After April patch tuesday, RDP works fine with radio boxes, checkboxes, listboxes, but text boxes do not work. Haven't ruled out whether it is the virtual keyboard on the client end or something on the server end. The mfc patch this week affects rdp clients. Anybody already figure this out?

Just installed Windows Server 2008R2 SP1 to see if it would fix this problem, but it didn't. Until an administrator logs onto the domain controller, there are many events that WFP blocked a connection from Server60 to Server60 or Server60 to Server70. Both server60 and server70 are the domain controllers. One the admin logs on, the WFP events stop.

The firewall is off by default GPO. Yes, i know that the WFP kicks in during the boot up sequence until the firewall takes over or in my case does not take over (since Vista), but i clearly should not have to autologon to a domain controller and call autolock or something.

Application Compatibility Clients are denied access to the central MSSQL database, but are able to leave their own files in the \AppCompat\ share.

The only computer that shows up in the "Microsoft Application Compatibility Manager" database is the the machine i initially created the .MSI installer from. The MSI successfullly pushed out via GPO and like i said there are tons of file in the \AppCompat\ share from many different computers. But only 1 pc shows up in the "Data Collection Manager" database, so i only have data from one machine.

i could manually add all these machines (ADNETBIOSNAME\MACHINENAME221$) to the MSSQL AppCompat db permissions list or use an SQL command to do so in batch, but i suspect i must have missed something. Do you manually edit the MSI to set the credentials?
