On a server I haven't installed, ntpd is broken:

# /etc/init.d/ntpd start
ntpd: error while loading shared libraries:
  libz.so.1: cannot open shared object file: Permission denied

but permissions look right:

# ldd /usr/sbin/ntpd
libz.so.1 => /usr/lib64/libz.so.1

# ls -l /usr/lib64/libz.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx root root /usr/lib64/libz.so.1 -> libz.so.1.2.3

# ls -l /usr/lib64/libz.so.1.2.3
-rwxr-xr-x root root /usr/lib64/libz.so.1.2.3

LD_LIBRARY_PATH is empty and the server is 64 bit:

# uname -a
Linux my.server 2.6.18-128.el5 #1 SMP [...] x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

How do I find out which library hasn't enough permissions?

What is the linux equivalent of -s windows ftp option that specifies a file that contains ftp commands:

>ftp -s:C:\ftp-commands.src

I'm trying to diagnose why cygwin sshd service starts and stops immediately. In the Vista application event log I found:

sshd: PID 3480: `sshd' service stopped, exit status: 255

It doesn't help much.

Where could I look for other hints? Other places in log than application?

A service is stopping immediately after being started. The service is cygwin sshd and runs under the SYSTEM account, with cyglsa-config for cygwin authentication. How do I diagnose this?

What rights a user needs to run cygwin sshd as a service on vista? A ssh-host-config creates user cyg_server with 5 rights:

$ editrights.exe -l -u cyg_server
SeAssignPrimaryTokenPrivilege
SeCreateTokenPrivilege
SeTcbPrivilege
SeServiceLogonRight
SeDenyRemoteInteractiveLogonRight

But the service failed (even after reboot, reinstall and with cygwin terminal in Administrator mode):

$ cygrunsrv.exe -S sshd
Error 1069: The service did not start due to a logon failure

I have a tar archive containing two owners, 1000 and 0 :

$ tar tfvz archive.tgz
drwxr-xr-x 1000/1000         main/
drwxr-xr-x 0/0               main/root_dir/
drwxr-xr-x 0/0               main/root_dir/home/
-rw-r--r-- 1000/1000         main/root_dir/home/file

Is there a simple way to change ownership only on directories/files with owner 1000 ? Those with owner 0 must stay unchanged.

I didn't find any options in tar or find that select a specific owner, for example tar --no-same-owner change all owners, not only owner 1000 (I extract archive with sudo tar xfz archive.tgz to allow creation of root (0) directories/files).

In a Bash script, I use "screen -L" to log executed commands in color. For example:

screen -L tree

Then we read the logfile with less -R.

When this script is executed, other screens are potentially running so we don't know which screenlog.* contains our output. I can't demand the user to customize his/her .screenrc.

Is there a way to specify a log name on command line or to read specific .screenrc commands?
