My goal is to get Remote Desktop Services on Windows Server 2008 R2 running with a Desktop pool (IE When a user connects, he is directed to 1 of many Remote Desktop servers with the lowest load).

It's my understand that in 2008 R2, this is referred to as a Connection Broker. I have installed it all, but im unable to figure out how to make the Web interface have the option "desktop".

Does anybody know how to add a shortcut to the desktop pool?

I have made several attempts to make this happen, my current attempt is built around the following guide, still unsuccessful.

This solution will be accessed via the internet, so the users will NOT have direct acccess to the terminal servers. ( So it reqiures Terminal server Gateway )

Error that shows in the web page opened by the Topology builder:

Error: An error occurred: "Microsoft.Rtc.Common.Data.SqlConnectionException" "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)"

Looking in the log file: ( I assume this is the acutal error making it STOP)

Installed SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility version is 8.05.1054 Error: SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility is not installed or its version is not high enough. SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatability SP2 or higher must be installed.

I have installed SQLServer2005_BC_x64.msi from MS, and cant seem to find this SP2 version.

SQL server is a 2008 R2 SP1. I have also tested with a 2008 SP3 SQL server same error.

Im wondering whats the best practice, we currently have a singel domain. And what we need is Guest accounts that should be able to logon course room and randndom work stations at time ( If they need to logon to a work station that will require work from IT department).

My first idea was:

Remove this group of users from Domain Users, and change the primary group. But their stilla ble to logon to any station ( Even if i remove the Authenticed users from local users group on the machine).

My second try was Deny rules.
This works instantly, but will create issues with allowing guest accounts to logon on certain workstations ( Il basicly be required to have different policies override one another).

I asssume this has been done many times before, but i failed to find a good article and best practice on it. And im wondering if the community has experience

Im having issues with a few packages failing in SCCM R3 and im wondering the folllowing.

It says it should try to reinstall if it failed the first time, what are the rules that govorn this ( IE how long before it tries, how many times and so on).

Is there realy no "failure" handeling? IE if the package fails run the following program?

I have the policy set to block all unkown addons, but im having issues with getting the right addons in there. This is working now, with exeption of some of the older Citrix access gateway and im looking for some log file where IE logs addons its not allowed to run.

I know the UI triggers and shows a list, but that list is NOT complete. So im hoping for some log file

Im wondering if i can install LYNC as a test basis side by side by the production OCS 2007 R2.

They would both be in the same domain, but off course on seperate domains.

Reason i ask is because i know LYNC does a schema update, and i wanna make sure this does not conflic with existing OCS

Im wonder how to configure Config Manager 2007 R2 to allow PXE boot to all machines (Its password protected) without every user getting a message saying they can install windows.

I would consider it acceptable if the users can reinstall windows on their own, but they should not get the ballon message.

Im using LastLogon attribute to check when a user account last was used, but i see the value seems to be updated on each DC when a user logs in via that DC. And its NOT synced across the different domain controlers.

So my question is: Is this how this attribute should work? Or is it something wrong in our domain?

We have exchange 2003, and i would like do add custom labels to the outlook calander when you add a appointment. I found ways to do this on the client, but i want to add one from the server so every client can use it without having to add it.

I was wondering how i would do this?

What is the access right required for a account to rename computers in active directory

We have a 2003 domain, and i need to set the page file to managed by the system ( For some reason it has a manual size set ). I was wondering where i find the group policy in active directory to do this.

In our enviroment we are often required to run old outdated versions of different applications, and im wondering about the security implications on that. So im hoping there is a site that basicly lists AppXX1 version V2 has X known exploits.

Im off course thinking about bigger applications like Java, IE.

We use active directory to push out applications and are looking for a solution that can do this:

1) I startup a clean machine (Proberbly virutal )
2) Start up some sort of monitor program
3) Install program XX and whatever else i want in that package.
4) Tell the monitor program to build the installer based on what has changed in filesystem & registry changes.

I know a solution like this exists for novell, so i figure a solution like this might exist for active directory

I have about 120 machines on a off site location, with a 40mbit connection to the home office. Most of the internet usage should be connections to other companies networks via web + citrix but i know many ppl so surf the internet (Plus the usual copying between different file servers), so im wondering if i should install a proxy server for web traffic.

I have been checking out the network traffic with ProCurve Manager and i can see at times our traffic is using the entire connection but i have not been able to to see what kind of traffic or who is making the traffic ( Source IP that is).

so i was planning to the following:
1) Install a windows machine in between the ProCurv switch and the cirix thing that routes between this office and main office.
2) Find some sort of software that can monitor the traffic types and see if a proxy server would be helpfull.
3) Install proxy if that would help

On a side note this office has ppl from almost the entire world so everyone is not going to visit the same "news" page and so on.

Im wondering what kind of software would you guys recommend for checking the traffic over the 40mbit line? Im sure a lot of linux solutions exist, but im not that familular with the os. I found Capsa from the internet searching, and it seems to be able to do what i want, but its a bit overkill i think and a bit expensive for my usage ( considering im only gonna use it to check if i need a proxy )

Backstory: We are looking at the posibility to migrate existing documentasion from a windows folder tree ( containing word and excel mostly) to a internal web site ( this is IT dokumentation, if the first go).

Because this is internal use, i was personaly considering using drupal to host site, but its my understanding this is what sharepoint does aswell.

What we need are:

• Restrict access ( IE login )
• Ability to search the documentation

What would be a pluss

• Version control
• Get access rights from AD
• Ability to import existing word / excel sheets into the site ( either bulk or 1 at the time, main problem here might be that our word docs contain pictures)
• Low cost ( Why i was thinking drupal )

anyone have personal experience with doing this ? And got recommendations on what software to use and so on

First of i know this question kind of both fitt this page and stackoverflow, but il post it here and if a moderator thinks otherwise please tell me il repost it ( If moving is not easy ).

My problem is this: We have many different windows mobile phones ( Mostly HTC ) and i need to setup the ability syncing email against our Exchange 2003 server ( In roaming mode , if that mathers ). Since we have many types of windows mobile phones it is annoying to have to dig in the menus to do this every time. So i was wondering is there a solution to do this automaticly?

Phones will be running either Windows mobile 6 or 6.1. If no solution to automaticly do this ( IE some sort of installer either from a windows machine or on the phone itself ) are the registry settings for setting up exchange easly documented?

At the end of the day the company is not that big, so i cannot invest unlimted amount of time into this either. Im fairly compitent in C# so any soltuion that involves code is fine

Does the Norman Antivirus corporate edition log virus detections in a central place? It currently sends out virus emails, but that is not so good for parsing the log files. My desired end result would be to be able to see detections or a per user or machine level. And see what % XX virus is of current detections.

I have copied over my site from another server ( Folders containing the site ) and when i use them on my new server (2008) i get a login dialog when i try to access pages that have their aspx page located in a subfolder. If i use the login dialog and login with a valid account on that server, IIS will give me a 404 error ( File is physically there on my server).

My first thought was this was NTFS rights issue, but it does not seem to be the case. I have set owner to administrators group, and i have also tried giving the everyone group full control with the same result.

All the aspx pages in the root folder function as needed.
