I'm responsible for maintaining a listing of installed components and where on the machine they're connected. I'm looking for a hardware inventory solution that doesn't force me to run a client software package, but will allow history of previously installed components. The idea would be that we can track that the last 3 computers have XX video cards in PCI slot 0.

Has anyone worked with something similar?

It must be Linux compatible, or atleast web based with ties to a Linux capable web server.

Has anyone found EPEL & RPM Fusion to be stable enough for production servers? Currently running CentOS

I've got a system with two different kernel tree sources installed. One kernel boots perfectly fine, the other kernel panics from not seeing the hdd / label.

How do I compare two different kernel builds and determine which kernel models one has, that the other does not?

So far I've tried diff against two scisi module listings. There's got to be an easier way!

I'm copying a large amount of files between disks. There's approximately 16 GB of data. I'd like to see progress information, and even an estimated time of completion from the command line.

Any advice?

I've got a Windows Server 2003 computer with a payroll application, and a new Server 2008 System that I'm migrating to. My question is regarding (I believe) all Windows:

How can I track all files installed by an installer so that I may copy those files over to another system? I notice in Windows that the installers for most applications don't always log everything. If I had a file list I could simply script the copy.

Being a Linux guy, I'd love to hear how to do this in Windows *
