How do I get my non-Windows (Linux, Mac) computers to properly register their IP address into my DNS server?

Dynamic Updates: Secure Only

DHCP SETTINGS
Checked - Enable DNS dynamic updates according to the settings below. Always dynamically update DNS records.

Checked - Discard A and PTR records when lease is deleted

Disabled - Name Protection

I've tried setting a DNS dynamic update registration credential user and then added that user to DNSUpdateProxy.

However, when I connect a Mac/Linux computer to the network, it'll get an IP from the DHCP server, but it will not add it's IP into the DNS. I cannot add these computers to the Windows domain.

I've searched around but can't seem to find a definitive solution. Any ideas?

I changed from secure only to unsecure and secure to see if it would resolve the problem. It does not.

Okay so I look at my DHCP logs here is what I see:

The first number indicates the Event ID.

10 A new IP address was leased to a client.
11 A lease was renewed by a client.
30 DNS update request to the named DNS server
31 DNS update failed
32 DNS update successful

On Windows clients you'll see something like this:

So it looks like the DHCP doesn't even initiate and update request to the DNS server.

I upgraded to Exchange 2007 around 6 years ago and thought I had completely removed Exchange 2003 from my infrastructure.

Now I'm trying to install Exchange 2013 and the install is saying that I still have a 2007 server.

Is there a recommended way on resolving this problem without having to find my Exchange 2003 installer/

Here's what I'm looking to do:

if http://acme.com/ has nothing after the slash rewrite to http://www.acme.com/

if http://www.acme.com/ has nothing after the slash do not rewrite

if http://acme.com/ has stuff after the slash (http://acme.com/abc/def) then rewrite to http://www.foobar.com/abc/def

Completely frustrating me.

When I try and upload a small jpeg file I get the following error:

Windows Server 2008 R2 DFS Replication across two locations

If the domain controller is offline what happens?

Are users still able to access the DFS namespace? Does replication still occur?

Old Server CentOS 5 PHP 5.2.14

New Server RHEL 6 PHP 5.2.14

Thus far, I've been compiling PHP 5.2.14 from source which has worked fine but now I'm realizing installing php-devel from rpm will ask to upgrade PHP. What's the best way to move to this new RHEL6 server but maintaining the PHP 5.2.14 version along with the extensions? I know I can't use the default RPM repo.

My task is to move 10-15 websites running on Linux webservers to new servers hosted by Amazon. These boxes are currently on dedicated servers. Some sites are running WordPress, some have custom CMS, and others might have RoR applications.

Unfortunately, there is sparse documentation regarding each site and how services/files are dependent on each other, which means there is a lot of detective work that needs to take place.

My goal is to properly document each site, what makes them work, etc., so future admins have at least something to work with.

Currently my strategy is to download each site so I have a backup of the files then scan through them looking for configuration files, DB connections, apache configs, etc., then create a nice spreadsheet with these findings and migrate these out to the new server.

My question to ServerFault is this what things you would look out for, and are there easier ways to handle this task that I'm missing?

Mac user Michael is a part of the Domain Users group. He connects to Videos using cifs://server/Videos and authenticates with his username Michael. Michael copies over a file "dance dance baby.avi".

User Jon opens the Videos folder but cannot see the dance dance baby.avi file.

Checking the dance dance baby.avi file permissions here is what I see:

Everyone - Read, Write
Domain Admins - Full Control
Michael - Read, Write
Owner of File - Michael

So here's my question, how come when Michael copies a file over from a Mac, the permissions on the file get changed even though Michael has no rights to change permissions?

If the same file is copied over from a Windows machine, it just inherits the proper permissions from the parent Video folder.

Am I missing something? Are my permissions wrong? Thanks.

Is there anyway to setup OS X Server so it is a replica of my Windows Server AD or do I need to do the "magic triangle" setup?

My goal is to allow SSO with my Mac users but would like to take advantage of some of Mac's server features like central updating (similar to WSUS), remote desktop, etc.

Cisco ASA 5510

I have a 15Mbps connection. Is it possible to limit the amount of bandwidth used per user either by bit or percentage?

For example, any of these would satisfy my requirements:

(1) User A can only use 500KB/s of my bandwidth (Leaves 1000KB/s for everyone else)

(2) User A can only use 25% of my total bandwidth (Leaves 1125KB/s for everyone else)

Using policing, I've only been able to rate limit the total bandwidth used by everyone on the connection. Thanks.

A question that I'm faced with currently. Here's my setup:

Cisco ASA 5510 15Mbps Internet Connection @ $1350/month

The bandwidth was originally meant for 35-45 people but we've grown quite quickly to roughly 60-65 people. Needless to say, when I check bandwidth logs it's almost always spiked at 15Mbps.

I did use Wireshark to do some poking around to see what was hogging up our bandwidth but with everything running through CDNs and Cloud Services it proved difficult to get a good grasp of where our bandwidth was going. So the question is do I ONLY implement bandwidth management through ASA OR upgrade the Internet to 50Mbps ($1600/month) and then implement bandwidth management through ASA?

Any suggestions on how to segment the 15Mbps connection if we decided ONLY to go with the bandwidth management solution? Thanks.

UPDATE 1 Installed PRTG and used packet content to monitor the traffic. As I suspected still pretty vague. My Top Connections include the following:

Other than the Pandora destination, the rest doesn't tell me much on how to properly control the bandwidth.

I've got 50-100MB pcap files captured from Wireshark and need to analyze where most of the traffic is going to/coming from.

What's the best way of doing this? Ideally I'd like to end up with an Excel csv file showing the top 50 or so IP addresses so I can sort and analyze.

I currently have ~12TB of data for a full disk to tape (LTO3) backup. Needless to say, it's now requiring over 16 tapes so I'm looking at other solutions. Here is what I've come up with. I'd like to hear the community's thoughts.

• Server for Disk-to-Disk
• BackupExec 2010 Using De-duplication Technology
• 20+TB worth of SATA drives
• LTO5 robotic library connected via SAS
• 1Gbps NIC connected to network

What I envision is doing a full backup of my entire network which will initially take a long time over the 1Gbps NIC but once the de-duplication kicks in backups should be quick. I will then use the LTO5 to make disk to tape backups and archive those accordingly.

What does everyone think? Any faster way of doing the initial full backup over the 1Gbps NIC? What will be my pain points? Is there a better way of doing what I'm trying to achieve?

I have about 50-75 LTO3 tapes stacked in my server room. Does anyone have any creative solutions on how to properly store them so they're easily accessed?

All the LTO3 cabinets I see are thousands of dollars, which seems overpriced to me.

i dont understand why these two check sums are different. how does adding a file and then removing it from the tmp directory create a "different" tar file?
