I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to deploy to Rackspace Cloud Sites via Git-push?
I contacted the Rackspace support and all they can tell me is that I might be able to as long as I don't need root access. Is that something that's possible?
I can't seem to find anything on Google, but I thought I would at least double check, as i'm only familiar with pushing to GitHub & Heroku.
Using Google apps business, I need to be able to have a [email protected] alias that would be sent to both [email protected] and [email protected]
Currently, I can't google my way out of this. Any suggestions?
The only thing I can think of is alias [email protected] to [email protected]. Then setup a filter to forward any mail incoming mail from [email protected] to [email protected]
To make a long story short, I am wondering if it is unwise to use large thin .vmdk's for a nas VM? I am planning on backing up to external 2TB drives (very small business), keeping one offsite at all times.
I could use a poweredge 840, but the fileserver is so lightly used, it seems like a waste. The company has an ESXi server that could store the fileserver disks.
Regarding the backups, would I be better off using cron+rsync and passthrough to USB using the native disk, or should I make a datastore and backup the .vmdk files? Also, there isn't any budget for software.
I can't seem to find an answer on google...perhaps I am using the wrong query.....
I have an ESXi test system that is in production and is using a single SATA disk for the VM's datastore. I would like to move them over to the new ESXi server and I am keeping the same disk. Can I simply swap drives and boot??
The test system is an i7 workstation and the new server is a supermicro with intel mobo and dual xeons....both running 4.1 (not positive the supermicro is running the 4.1 update 1).
(also no raid because the VM's are just running license dongles for software on the network...VM's backed up elsewhere)
I need a free fileserver solution mixed Mac/Win environment for the small print shop I work at. We are having problems with using SMB on OS-X (file w/o extensions are getting lost and weird SMB lag with 10.6).
We are currently running the Fileserver with Windows 2000 Server on a PowerEdge 850.
Being a print shop, the art department is run on OS-X. The rest of the shop is running WinXP (2-3 macs, 5 win) and 5 servers (2k3 and 2k8). We don't have an Active Directory or LDAP. It mainly stores fonts, logos, software ISOs, Acronis cold images, and job archives.
• FreeNAS 8 seems to offer a lot out of the box that would help our shop:
Time machine support AFP for the macs Easy for others to use if I am out on Vaca or sick ZFS snapshots would be cool, but not necessary
• Ubuntu server can be configured for all but ZFS. However, i'm not extremely comfortable with bash.
• Openfiler seems to be rock solid. However, the lack of AFP means that i'm back to the same issues with Server2000.
Any ideas? I would love to run FreeNAS, but I'm not sure if this is unwise. I could make an openfiler VM on my ESXI and backup FreeNAS to that, in case of a software issue.
I was considering migrating the fileserver to the ESXi box and having it use its own datastore and separate drives. Is this a bad idea? With the backups for the ESXi servers on there, it kind of worries me if the SHTF.
Long story short, we needed a faster computer to replace our main RIP server. Being on a tight budget we sold off our old Dell P4 & Pentium D servers and bought a used Dual Xeon dual core 3ghz box with and virtualized the servers with ESXi 4.1. We are just using the free plan, and using internal storage (12 - 7200rpm SATA bays). The ESXi server is not being hit hard, and with 5-6 servers it idles 60% of the time.
We can keep it on the PowerEdge 850 if that's a better option. I was thinking of storing an extra copy of the VMs on the server and pointing Workstation or Fusion to those to help out in a pinch if there is a hardware failure. If I had the fileserver on the ESXi box, that would be a lot more work to recover it….am I worrying too much being it is a small shop?
I just did a conversion from an Acronis echo backup of a windows XP machine, and I am having trouble getting the USB device to pass through (in this case a USB license dongle). I added the USB controller, but the USB devices will not show up in the list.
I can see the dongle from a fresh install of Server 2008, but not this machine.
One note, when opening up the settings I get this error:
"An IDE controller is found but the virtual machine does not support this option."
After clicking the "OK" button, I get this:
"A flat backing option was not found"
Any ideas?
I have a CentOS VPS on Knownhost.com. I am using it to host one Wordpress site, that currently doesn't have any traffic (not launched yet). I was getting these process tracking emails (7 different procs) constantly after Knownhost installed FastCGI.
The problem is i'm not sure what this means... I could find info on google about how to stop it, but not what it means.
Here is an example of message:

The confusing part is that the site is not launched and there is 0 traffic. I also could not find the processes in WHM/Cpanel.

We have added the user "myuser" to the /etc/csf/csf.pignore file to prevent such fake alerts in future.
Please note that Fcgi method is only recommended for advanced administrators who understand how to tune the performance of mod_fcgid. So it is better to switch from fcgi to suphp.

Would you guys concur with this? I am a linux noob, but I would like to think I could research enough to tune FastCGI (though honestly, I know nothing about it)

I am setting up a lab for learning purposes. I don't have a rack yet, but I just purchased a Supermicro 2U enclosure on eBay with some rails.
How does it work with connecting the server to the rack? I've got no experience with rack mounted equipment, and I haven't bought a rack yet. I want to make sure I don't mix the wrong types of equipment.
My current place of employment is a very small print shop with average home networking equipment. I have a spare switch I could give them, but I don't want to hand them a ticking timebomb at the same time.
The shop has 7 Clients, 3 servers, & 6 IP printers. They currently have a 16 port 10/100 d-link switch, and a netgear gigabit switch that is connected to the servers. They seem to be somewhat flakey, unless they are rebooted every few weeks. They bosses seem to be ok with an occasional interruption with the current setup, as long as it's only for a few mins.
My question is, would a Cisco Catalyst 2950 switch be ok to use in production? I have never used it outside of my CCNA lab, it works great but is now collecting dust. I am thinking of "donating" it to them, but only if it will help things. I was thinking of even setting up two, one unplugged as a spare ready to go. If their pc using staff grows much higher and starts using a domain, I would probably go the procurve route.
I work in a very small print shop that has 3 servers and 7 client workstations. Considering the size of the company, I am trying to implement a reasonable backup/recovery plan.
The problem is the budget to do so is incredibly low to nothing, so I have to work with what I have available. The company prints files that are done in house and submitted by customers. We sometimes reprint old jobs, and need to pull up those from the fileserver. Also client machines are backed up to the fileserver as well.
The first two servers are controlling the RIP system, and proofing system, and both pretty much stay the same, with the exception of the jobs that are temporarily ran through them. They run on a single 7200k drive each. For these servers I have ghost images backed up on the fileserver and DVDs.
The fileserver is where I am uneasy about. Currently it (Poweredge 830) is running 2000 server and has the OS on a single disk, and the files on a 2nd 1TB disk. Currently nothing on the 2nd disk is being backed up offsite. I thought of proposing that they at least buy two 1 TB USB drives and alternate them by having one person take them home and then bring back in to keep a copy offsite. Alternatively I can FTP the offsite backups to an old machine at home through the VPN, but the files might be a little large (30-40gb a month).
If I could start from scratch and have a decent budget I would do things differently, but considering $200 would be the cap, would this setup be ok? Any other suggestions?
