I'm trying to make the upgrade from squeeze to wheezy, which I think I did successfully, except upgrading causes this error. What could be the problem?

I'm trying to set up a subdomain but upon enabling it and reloading apache, I get this error:

I'm running Apache/2.4.16 (Debian sid)

I have a log file with a list of many entries. With grep regex I want to match the first word and another word which can be anywhere in the string.

For example, if I specified "user1" the search would search:

grep -E '^(IP_CONNECT|IP_DISCONNECT) user1' file.txt

However this won't match unless user1 is at the beginning of the string whereas I want to match it if it appears anywhere in the string. How is this done?

I own 6 Virtual Machines that need to access each other's files. The way I've been doing it now is by making a symlink of each file that needs to be shared in the web directory and using POST and PHP to keep some of the files secure.

Is there a better way to do this though? Is there a better way to gain read or even write access to my other machines without installing a webserver on each one? Perhaps even a link that can point to a file on another server?

I'm trying to set up sftp so that a few trusted people can access/edit/create some files. I have jailed a user into their home directory (/home/name) but have run into a problem. I want for them to also be able to access other parts of the VPS because it is also a game server, webhost, etc, and I want for them to be able to have full control of files outside their jailed directory.

I tried making a symlink (ln -s) to the desired directory but it does not work, as expected. I tried (cp -rl) to the files that I wanted to give access and it worked -- they can edit the files in their directory and it changes the one stored outside of jail. BUT they cannot create new files (they can but it won't update outside of jail). I know I'm probably not doing this the "right way" but what can I do to do what I want?

I'm trying to allow a user "user" to access my server by either sftp or ssh. I want to jail them into a directory with chroot. I read the instructions here however it does not work. I did the following:

1. useradd user

2. modify /etc/ssh/sshd_config and added

   Match User user

   ForceCommand internal-sftp

   ChrootDirectory /home/duke/aa/smart to the bottom of the file

3. changed the subsystem line to Subsystem sftp internal-sftp

4. restarted sshd with /etc/init.d/ssh restart

5. logged in with ssh as user "user" with PuTTY

Putty says "Server unexpectly closed the connection".

Why is this and how can it be fixed?

Following the suggestions below, I've made the bottom of sshd_config look like:

Match User user
   ChrootDirectory /tmp

yet no change. I do get a password OK but I cannot connect via ssh nor sftp. What gives?

I want to jail a particular user into a directory (so they can sftp and ssh) using chroot on Debian. How can I do this?

The man page says

I want to jail user "smart" into /home/servers/smart but when I type: chroot --userspec=1001 /home/servers/smart, it says chroot: failed to run command '/bin/bash': No such file or directory

I've googled my brains out and I can't find a single tutorial on the built-in chroot command.

I have text I want to recursively search in mydir/. I would normally type grep -r "text to find" mydir/" but what would I type if I wanted to search all the files except a specific one?

For example, I do not want to search the file "myfile.txt" but it is contained in the directory.

What would I type?

Randomly couldn't connect to my VPS, it was working literally hours ago, and I haven't done anything out of the ordinary. What would be the most likely problem?

Edit: I do remember accidentally doing sudo chmod -R 777 /var/. According to the second answer on ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host /var/log/btmp should be 600, but I do not have btmp in my /var/log dir

I'm trying to install Z-threads on Ubuntu but am running into a problem. I've installed Z-threads dozens of times but this is the first time this has happened. I usually use these to install it:

Why does every domain have to end with .(something), like .tk, .com, .gov?

What are the technical reasons that prevent creating a domain without such suffixes?

I have a vps where a website is hosted on var/www/site rather than the usual var/www. I want a domain to point to var/www/site rather than var/www. Not sure what to put in the zones file.

I'm trying to run a server that writes to $log (a txt file) and then find all the text in the logfile that starts with [1] and put it in another file. Here's my attempt. tee -a $log works along with everything else. The grep command doesn't though.

What can be done to copy all the text from tee -a $log starting with [1] to another file?

I've been knocking my head out for a while on this one and have read many tutorials, but I just can't get this to work. Ajaxterm, is a webbased SSH client; once installed apt-get install ajaxterm and then enabling it with /etc/init.d/ajaxterm start I should be able to access the SSH terminal with http://mywebsite:8022/

But doing so only gives me a "Page not found", any suggestions?

I have VPS running Debian 5.0 (I think) and I would like to get it to run PHP files. I was told it needed to be configured with Apache. I tried entering the command apt-get install apache2 php5 libapache2-mod-php5. But there was no change. Console output: http://pastebin.com/sVMWq6mA

I have a vps running debian OS and would like to create user accounts on it.

I want it so that when the user logs in with sftp, everything in var appears to be their home directory and they cannot cd out of it.

For example, when user3 logs in, they have access to everything in var (read, write, execute) but cannot view (cd) user1 or user2's personal stuff.

How would I go about doing this?

I think I have to do this in chroot, but I have no idea how this would work.
