I have a Linux guest in VMware that been assigned a static IP, not using DHCP.
Whats the best way to change its IP when SRM is used to move the VM to another site ?
My Knowledge of VMware is limited and google brings up two methods which seem to be either use a script that SRM calls or have IP addresses defined in SRM for live and failover domains - but not sure if I can do this if the Linux VM is not using DHCP ?
Can anyone point me down the right path?
The VM guest is Ubuntu 16.
I want to share a volume from an OEL8 server to two other OEL8 servers and let them read/write to the volume simultaneously. I've been asked to check if there are anymore secure methods/technology in OEL other than an NFS shares. I thought about creating iscsi targets. Are there any new filesystem types that meet my needs ?
I'm preparing a Centos7.4 cloud image and I have install cloud-init cloud-utils and cloud-growpart.
When I import into Openstack as a qcow2 image it doesn't resize my root if I create an instance with a bigger disk than the orginal image. If I use normal disks with no LVM and a single partition it works .
For some reason it doesnt like a 2 partition set up where /boot is partition1 and / is partition 2. All the docs seems to say that cloud-utils-growpart will work with lvm and ext4 if the root partition is the last partition. Any ideas ?

Is it possible to figure out which cloud image maps to which iso release for Centos.
I would like a Centos 7.3 minimal image, but when I browse the Centos cloud image site I cannot see any references to minor releases .

I want to mount a SAN CIFS share on a solaris 10 u11 server.
I found and info doc from Oracle saying its not supported until Solaris 11.
Are there any 3rd party / Freeware tools for Solaris 10 that will enable the mounting of a CIFS share on Solaris 10 ?
I'm about to setup a Linode running a Centos server with a rails apps. The rails app has a contact us form. That justs send enquirys to the site owner. No other email functionality is needed
The site owner just uses his gmail email account, so no email is currently configured for the domain hosting rails app.
My question is, do I have to setup postfix on server hosting the rails app so it can send emails to the site owner or is there some other way ?
If I have to do it, am I correct in assuming I'll have to setup MX records, Sender frameworks SSL certs,etc ? :(

After installing HP's PSP 8.73 on RHEL5 with a G7 Blade, I end up with 4 grub entries
1 The Standard RHEL
2 HP (choosen as default)
3 HP hpahcisr
4 HP mptlinux
I'm confused as to why I get all these entries, does entry 2 contain 3 and 4 ?. If I boot from 2 will I be booting with all the HP drivers(3 and 4) and an HP kernel ?
An audit has pointed out that a RHEL server I manage has not had the latest kernel patches applied. I'm confused about kernel patching and within RHEL in relation to RHEL dot releases i.e 5.2 , 5.3 ,5.4 ..... Can someone answer these questions ?
If I want to stay at a dot release of RHEL, say 5.4, can apply just updates to the 5.4 kernel or will applying kernel updates bring the server to a later dot release by default? The reason for this question is that I have applications that are only supported on say RHEL5.4 and going to a more recent dot release of RHEL 5 would break the support.
I have some HP psp hba drivers compiled against the currently installed kernel, will applying a kernel update break these drivers as they were complied against the orginal kernel ?
Anything else I need to look out for with regards to kernel patching ?
I have very broad view that Redhat Directory server , 389 directory server and Centos Directory server are all the same. Its just the support you pay for on the RedHat version.
Is this true ? Are there any differences between centos ds and 389 ds ?
I've a Dell R610 server up and running with RHEL5, with not much possibility of getting a reboot in the near future. The DRAC card was not setup in BIOS on the initial install.
My question is there any way I can configure the DRAC to get on the network without rebooting and going to BIOS ?
I've tried the dell racadm rpms but they cannot find the DRAC card, saying "RACADM is unable to process the request because there is no local RAC config to communicate with" I'm not sure if this message is because it was not configured at install time via the BIOS.
I have a CentOS 5 VM and I've just increased the VM disk from 10G to 20G, but I cannot get fdisk to see the new disk size without a reboot.
I've tried echo 1 > /sys/block/sda/device/rescan, it seems to indicate it can see the new size, but when I go to fdisk to create a new partion it still sees the disk as 10G.
Any ideas?

Mirroring 2 internal disks with HW raid and then putting ZFS filesystem on top
or
Using the 2 internal disks without HW Raid and creating a ZFS mirror with the 2 disks.
I've read that to get the full benifits of ZFS it needs at least 2 disks to use its error correction and prediction features fully.
Its a question of ZFS ontop of HW RAID , or just ZFS , not HW vs ZFS . Performance is not my issue.

I can get to a site form my Squid server directly using lynx http://my-URL , ie not using squid as the proxy, just to prove the connectivity exists. Lynx connects fine to the site - its a Weblogic portal
When I try the same site from client with the squid machine as a proxy I get a squid error indicating that the destination site refused the connection from Squid.
The squid server is a RHEL5.5 server.
The error is something like
The following error was encountered: Connection Failed
The systen returned: (13) Permission denied
The squid access.log just indicates a TCP_MISS. It's as if the destination site knows its been accessed by squid and is not allowing ?
I've a VM running Centos 5.5 and I'm trying to get yum to update via a company proxy.
I can browse the web within the VM using the proxy setting , but I cannot get yum to use the proxy.
I'm getting the following error:
[Errno 14] HTTP Error 302: The HTTP server returned a redirect error
that would lead to an infinite loop.

I've setup the proxy=http://my-proxy:8080/ and proxy_username= and proxy_password= in my /etc/yum.conf to the same values I'm using in firefox on the VM - which is working.
/etc/yum.repos.d has not been changed.
The proxy presents a web page upon initial 1st use of the proxy, asking for username and password. I think this could be causing the issue, is there any way yum can deal with this ?
I have an internal website that cannot be accessed from some machines on my network, due to the physical location, VPN ,network ranges etc. I would like to install Squid on "in between" network to forward request from the clients that cannot reach the website.
The issue is the clients have no ability to connect to www.example.com , but they can reach a network with a squid proxy , which in turn can reach www.example.com
What is the correct term I need to research in squid , is it just caching www.example.com or do I need to set the clients to use a URL that gets rewritten ? i.e www.squid-example.com -- > www.example.com

The server I'm being asked to sync to is a firewall , and I've now been told that it is not syncing with anything. So I suppose I need to know if I can force my server to sync with a server that is stratum 16 i.e not sync'd. Is that possible ?
I've an IBM X3550M3 which I want to kickstart over the network and install RHEL5.u4
I get so far then it cannot recognize the built-in raid device - it does this with a straight DVD hands on install too.

I understand I can use the kickstart directive to tell it where to find the RAID driver devicedriver=path to device driver.img
What I'm not sure about is how I get the files from the downloaded RAID driver.iso to become an .img file so I can load them with PXE kickstart.
Can anyone explain the process, or point to some docs ?

I've been configuring OpenLDAP on RHEL 6 and its seems you have run the following to rebuild the config dirs. I'm ok with that , but my issues is , say I want to change the server passwd , do I have to go through the whole process every time I change the config ? Is there a way of changing the slapd config after its been built using the RHEL6 method ?

This example assumes that the file to convert from the old slapd configuration is located at /etc/openldap/slapd.conf and the new directory for OpenLDAP configuration is located at /etc/openldap/slapd.d/. Remove the contents of the new /etc/openldap/slapd.d/ directory:
rm -rf /etc/openldap/slapd.d/*
Run slaptest to check the validity of the configuration file and specify the new configuration directory: slaptest -f /etc/openldap/slapd.conf -F /etc/openldap/slapd.d
Configure permissions on the new directory: chown -R ldap:ldap /etc/openldap/slapd.d
chmod -R 000 /etc/openldap/slapd.d
chmod -R u+rwX /etc/openldap/slapd.d
To clarify. I'm after help on how to edit the slapd configuration using the newer versions of openldap , where the config is held in a schema rather than the original slapd.conf
