I installed Vagrant on Windows 10. But it won't run the VM because it complains that the installed Cygwin rsync is incompatible.
Right now, I have no need to synchronize files with Windows and so I don't think I need rsync.
Is it possible to tell Vagrant to turn this requirement / option off?
Hi I'm trying to see if a server I'm running has been stopped (if it has, it returns a 502 Bad Gateway message.)
So I tried to do this :
curl http://MY_URL | grep "502"
The curl part returns what I expect it to.
But when I pipe it into grep, grep seems to be adding a bunch of headings :

These aren't in the output from curl. And grep on ordinary text files doesn't add them. So why are they getting added to curl piped through grep?
I want to write a shell script that does what a recorded macro would do and replay key-presses. In particular, to produce ctrl+a.
Is this possible?
I've tried things like echo \0141, but it just says there's no command \0141.
I have a work environment on my Ubuntu laptop in which I want to use three different screens.
Eg. in terminal, I usually write
screen -S mywork
run_server_1
then, ctrl-a c to create a second screen
run_server_2
etc.
I'd like to write a script to automate setting up this environment, but how can I control multiple screens from one script?
Update : I really want to be able to do this from a shell script, not a screen config. file. Is there a way to do that?
According to the Python documentation, the "profile" module is part of the standard library.
But I can't find it.
On my home machine, I was able to add it using apt-get install. (ie. it's split out into a separate ubuntu package.)
On my work machine, (also ubuntu) I'm running in a virtualenv, so apt-get install isn't relevant. I can install python modules from pypi using easy-install, but I can't see anything on pypi which corresponds to the profiling module. (Presumably because it's meant to be part of the standard python install.)
So how can I install it in this environment?
Simple question. I have access to PostgreSQL. If I knew the name of the database I could
psql -d dbname
but if I don't know dbname, how can I list what databases are there?
I've been using ssh to log-in to a remote server I rent for several years. Last week I got a message from them saying they upgraded my account and server. Now when I go to login, I get this message from ssh

Now, I assume that this has been triggered by my host upgrading my server. So I want to trust this site again. But I can't quite see how.
I looked in known_hosts and all there are there are public-keys. But I can't tell which of these comes from the old version of this particular server. Nor do I know how to get a correct key for the host; the previous time I made contact, I think ssh just confirmed with me and automatically saved it. Now it says I've requested strict checking, but I have no idea when I did this or where to reset it.

I was trying to push from my Git workspace up to Github but my added and committed changes didn't seem to get uploaded.
Then, doing a "git branch" I got something that looked like this :

master
Foolishly, I thought I could get back into master with
git checkout master
and now my changes seem to have gone. My master branch is about a day old. And there seems no way to switch back to this (no branch).
Are my changes lost? Or is there a way to recover them?
I have a project with a number of files that I created in Linux.
And I needed to give another user write permission on them. So I created a "dev" group of which he and I are members and changed the ownership of the files to this group.
A typical file now has these permissions :
-rw-rw-r-- 1 phil dev 5617 Jul 14 15:45 profile.html
However, when I edit the file profile.html it reverts to me like this, and my colleague loses the ability to edit.

How do I avoid it reverting like this? Was changing the ownership the wrong thing to do? Or was it done with the wrong options? Or is this to do with my editor (emacs) configuration?
I tried to upgrade Ubuntu from Hardy to Intrepid last night, and seem to have killed it.
I can boot into "recovery mode" and the root shell, but it freezes when it tries to start the Gnome environment etc.
In this recovery mode it doesn't seem to be on the network (ie. ifconfig shows the lo bit but not the eth0 bit) And I can't ping or ssh to it.
How can I start networking from this prompt?

On a standard, dual boot Vista Home and Ubuntu, I'd like to be able to access the Ubuntu partition from Windows. I imagine that there must be software to let you do this.
Can anyone recommend a good (preferably free-as-in-speech) package to do this?
Update : thanks to the first posters here I tried fs-driver, but it seems to consider my Linux partition unformatted, and wants to format it.
Surely someone has written a decent shell for Windows.
I'm looking for
a) something more or less like the ordinary linux shell (ie. history, completion etc.)
b) something which is a simple install (easier than Cygwin which didn't seem all that good when I tried it.)
Bonus points if it's :
c) Free (as in speech)
d) Allows forward slashes instead of back-slashes in paths
