When should you place a server in a DMZ vs opening ports on the firewall and keeping it within the network? I'm referring to active directory servers, IIS servers, and mostly things on a windows based setup.
Some issues I've noticed with placing in the DMZ is that it's no longer on the domain, it doesn't have nameserver access to our internal servers, and a few other things that make it strange to work with.
If I have an email server A (domainA.com) and another email server B (domainB.com), is it considered spoofing if I choose to send an email from server A with the return/sender address [email protected]?
How will this affect spam filters?
I am wondering because I use a third party vendor to send emails on my behalf and it is easiest if they do it from their own servers rather than mine. If this is bad practice then how do you suggest I accomplish this goal?
We have a pretty nice piece of hardware set up to run multiple virtual machines in vmware and one of the vm's is an instance of Windows Server 2003 running SQL Server 2005. For some reason we occasionally see 10-20 seconds of straight packet loss to this machine from remote machines (my workstation) as well as other vm's on the same physical hardware. I am using PingPlotter to keep a close eye on the packet loss.
So far we've turned off flow control on the NIC but we are already running out of other things to try. What might be causing this and how can I identify the problem?
Note: We also have another server with a very similar configuration with the same type of problem to a lesser extent (because its not used as heavily?)
To save some money I'm sure we would all prefer to build our own workstations. But this takes a lot more work than simply buying one off the shelf. With any luck, you'll end up with a better machine for a lower price.
What methodologies do you use to decide on which parts to buy? Do you look at benchmarks? Do you find things that have compatible bus speeds? How do you know where to look to make sure everything will be compatible? Do you buy a bare bones machine and extend it?
