I have a NAS (Synology DS411, DSM 4.3) that was configured to be joined to an AD domain. Privileges were appropriately set on the shares and everything was fine.

I (foolishly) changed the name of the device on the network. This action removed the device from the domain. I then set to join it to the domain again (successfully).

Now:

• I cannot access the shared folders with the network name via Windows Explorer (say \\NAS, from a computer on the same domain). A popup appears that asks for my credentials and says "The system cannot contact a domain controller to service the authentication request. Try again later". Entering the crendentials is of no use.
• Accessing the shared folders with the IP address seems to be working (say \\192.168.1.50, from a computer on the same domain).
• From the domain controller, accessing the shared folders with the network name seems to be working, though very slowly.

Any ideas?

I have performance problems on a virtual hard drive on a VMWare ESX 4.0 virtual machine. See the weird following sequential read speed graph:

I passed the test several times, and the shape is consistent. The guest OS is Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition x86, and the virtual hard drive is formatted in NTFS.

For the record, this virtual machine worked just right on another ESX server, and has been moved to a new one, using the Migrate command.

Any idea?

I just converted a physical Windows XP x64 machine with 4 CPUs to a VMWare virtual machine with 4CPUs (on a ESX server) using the VMWare Standalone Converter.

Everything worked just great, except that the OS now seems to use only 2 CPUs (when 4 are installed, see the following image). This must be a Windows XP issue rather than a VMWare issue, but I can not really rule out any reason at this stage.

What can I do?

I have set up a Windows Server 2008 Core Edition, with a local administrator account only. I have set up (I think) remote connection and remote administration (following this).

I have set up RSAT on my Windows 7 Professional desktop, and i am logged with a local administrator account.

Remote desktop works all right, but I cannot get to use most of the administration tools:

• I have access to Services and can stop/start services remotely.
• I have access to the Task Manager.
• I cannot use the Disk Manager (complains about access rights).
• I cannot use the Users and Local Groups (access denied).
• I cannot use the Device Manager (access denied).

I tried establishing a remote smb connection using net use \\server_name\IPC$ /u:Administrator *, to no avail.

Any idea ?

A bit of context first : on Windows 2008 Standard x64 with 8Gb RAM, I have 5 VMs running which should take up 1664Mb RAM (3*256Mb+384Mb+512Mb). There is nothing else running on this server except the basic OS components (this not a Core installation). I know that each VM will use more RAM on the host than what has been configured in Hyper-V.

But when I run the task manager, it says 6.7Gb used ! If I sum up the RAM used by each process in the task manager (showing all users processes), I get to something around 1Gb...

So : how can I check how much RAM each VM is really using on the host (it does not seem to be available via task manager) ?

Note that I am aware of the fact that my problem could be unrelated to VM RAM usage, but I would still very much like to know how to do this.
