I'm setting up a new Windows 2008 R2 server to take over from a older Windows 2003 box in a small windows domain. I discovered that the old server is running the only certificate service in the domain. Do I need to take any special steps, or can I just run the certificate service on the new server?
Update: It seems that my root certificate expired a few days ago. Would I be just as well off moving to the new server directly as renewing the old certificate?
I recently discovered that Active Directory replication started failing about a month ago. If I attempt to Replicate Now from the failing domain controller, I receive The following error occurred during the attempt to synchronize the domain controllers: Access is denied.
Directory Service log tells basically the same story; repeating two events
It is between two servers at a remote site. One is Windows 2003 and the other is Windows 2000; the Windows 2000 machines is experiencing the errors. The domain is older OUR_DOMAIN style.

I recently noticed Shared Folder under New in Active Directory Users and Computers. What is the purpose of creating a shared folder in active directory? Where would it appear to a user?

I have one user whose computer just got updated to the 7.0 Remote Desktop Connection. Concurrently, she has started having a problem closing the MDI child windows in an old FoxPro application running on the remote server.
We have a HP ProCurve 420 wireless access point hooked up to our LAN, which then connects to the internet though a gateway router. Is it possible to set up a guest SSID, which can access the internet but not our LAN?
After reading through the manual, I don't see anything put forward as providing this function, but there are enough features to make me think I may have missed the implications of one of them.
I recently set up the first Vista laptop for our domain, and discovered that there is no longer a domain dropdown box. Main application is switching between domain and local computer accounts. Since the syntax of a full domain logon name is minor trivia to a user, is there a way put back the domain select, or at least have multiple users shown on the "Switch User" screen?
I have a program assigning serial numbers on a client PC (Windows XP). It writes a log to a server file share (Windows Server 2003), and also locally in case of network error. (This means that the vast majority of lines are in both files.) Every once in a while, the write to the server log does fail. Is there a good way to merge the two log files, restoring the missing entries?
I'd rather not do a full copy; there is currently some data which is only on the server copy, and I also want to leave open the possibility of multiple stations.
It should be fairly easy to do an interactive merge, but I would prefer something automatic, since it's basically set-union on the lines of the files.
A while back I pulled some spare parts to set up a test for backuppc. Two largish hard drives were merged into a single volume with LVM. A few months later, it seems that the second drive is going/gone bad. Last I checked, the data I have would just fit on the first drive, if I could convince the filesystems to resize.
I setup the filesystem as reiserfs, following some reports that it worked well for backuppc. I started using resierfsck to see how extensive the damage was, including trying --rebuild-tree with a badblock list (from the badblocks program). But every time I run, it finds a new bad block and halts, so it looks like the disk is a lost cause.
resize_resierfs tells me that I need to run reiserfsck --check first, even with -f. That in turn tells me it can't run because of an incomplete --rebuild-tree.
At least the data is only backup, so nothing vital would be lost by starting over, just a lot of time downloading initial backups.
Terminal server is not loading profiles; it is possible to log in with a default profile, but many things would be missing. Error message reported insuffucient resources. Noticed several terminal sessions had initial login over a month ago. Restarted some services with large memory consumption (but not large enough to cause problems) Discovered virtual memory was on manual, and returned to system managed. No improvement.

I have a user is no longer able to access all mapped network drives/shares. He was able to access them in the past. Error message indicates drive not found. Other network services are operable (internet, e-mail, etc.) Other logins on the same computer are able to use network drives, but the user has the same permissions.
User is runing Windows XP, server is Windows 2003. User is logging into a windows domain.
I have one computer (Windows XP) which is updating via update services. Most updates are installing successfully, however updates to MS Office are failing to install. Windows updates then pops up again with the list of pending office updates still listed. Repeated attempts to install the updates fail again.
After uninstalling Symantec Enpoint Protection (manually) one computer (Windows XP) has an inoperative NIC; it shows up in device manager as conflicted.
I tried doing a windows repair from CD, which did not improve the situation. When I went to reinstall the drivers, driver installation failed with:
Cannot install this hardware
The system cannot find the file specified
I've deleted the NIC in device manager without improvement.
