I have a machine with 3 2TB SSD drives, I want to configure openzfs at least on two of them. The root partition has ext4 and if possible I would like to avoid reinstalling everything, so I am wondering if it makes sense to create a large file in root ext4 partition, and mount it as virtual block device strictly for parity storage.

Is the above configuration possible? or would be preferrable to take the extra-effort to resize the root partition and create another dedicated zfs partition from the main SSD?

I'm using Network Monitor 3.4 with the nmdecrypt expert. I'm opening a nimbuzz conversation node in the conversation window and i click Expert-> nmDecrpt -> run Expert

that shows up a window where i have to add the server certificate. I am not sure how to retrieve the server certificate for nimbuzz XMPP chat service. Any idea how to do this?

this question is a follow up question of this one.

Edit for some background so it might be that this is encrypted with the server pubkey and i cannot retrieve the message, unless i debug the native binary and try to intercept the encryption code. I have a test client (using agsXMPP) that is able to connect with nimbuzz with no problems. the only thing that is not working is adding invisible mode. It seems this is some packet sent from the official client during login which i want to obtain. any suggestions to try to grab this info would be greatly appreciated. Maybe i should get myself (and learn) IDA pro?

I need to capture all the traffic, specially during login, between nimbuzz pc client and nimbuzz server. The reason is that i need to debug outgoing packets at login that mark the user visibility status in order to reproduce them in a in-house XMPP client application

I've tried doing this with wireshark, but i seem to be pretty helpless with this tool. Also, the packets i've been able to see are all before the SASL negotiation happens, after that, i cannot see the xml packets being exchanged

any help for how to achieve this task is greatly appreciated (preferably on Windows, since there is no nimbuzz client for linux, in any case i can install one in a VM and monitor the traffic between the VM instance in the linux host)

i've installed a phusion-passenger website in Apache2, the site sits at 192.168.0.50 in my network.

here it is the VirtualHost element

now, this is how i have suceeded accessing it so far:

  • to be able to access the site from another machine in the LAN** i need to add my_web_host to my /etc/hosts file and access it from a browser with http://my_web_host

things that annoys me and want to change are that

  • if i access the machine directly with http://192.168.0.50/ i see a generic message from Apache telling me that 'it works', but i would like it to redirect me to the redmine site if possible

  • totally unacceptable is the fact that if i access the machine with http://192.168.0.50/redmine i get to see all the files and folders that actually sit at /var/www/website (which is actually a symbolic link to the redmine public installation folder)

** this is meant as a LAN only website so i really don't care about WAN access,but if you feel like educating me on how to fix this when the website is also accessed over public internet, please by all means, feel free to do so

I want to install redmine, so i found convenient to try installing first bitnami RubyStack locally, however i do not want it to use its default mysql server, but i want it to use my already installed mysql instance. In here it mentions that MySQL is installed as a 'service' from the instalation folder, but i'm curious if this means its tinkering with /etc/init.d/ or /etc/mysql folders

Any has used RubyStack with existing mysql db?

I've disabled all port forwarding from my router (ssh 22 and openvpn 1194), so I don't understand how these packets are making it to the 192.168.218.101 box (my computer called 'localhost').

I've tried adding tcpdump to investigate these packets with

sudo tcpdump "(dst net 192.168.218.0/24 and ! src net 192.168.218.0/24)"

but it does not return a single line of output.

Any idea why these packets are making it through the router? The router is a home D-Link Dir-600, I've disabled port forwarding and no firewall rules, DMZ disabled.

What sort of diagnostics can I run to know what is the payload in these packets? Why does tcpdump not show anything?

I want to log all INPUT packets that do not originate in the LAN for audit purposes, I have a script with tcpdump basically appending to a file the result from this:

however, I've seen some outside attempts in /var/log/syslog

BTW, as an a side question, does iptables support logging different things to different files?

I'm trying to setup client access policies, akin to what is described in openvpn documentation. The configuration will use tun device

in the above example, it seems the only thing restricting employees and contractors is an ifconfig command being pushed from the server. What happens if the client just comments the pull directive, the client will simply not connect?

I've read this FAQ, and makes me a bit nervous that a unauthorized client could access off-limits networks by fiddling locally with ifconfig. Is it secure to rely on this sort of client configuration?

if the answer is that is not that secure, what would be the best way to secure network access policies for different clients?

according to man git-daemon, this comes with the git package, althought i've look in /etc/init.d and /usr/bin/git* and i can't find where this is

$ git --version
git version 1.7.1
$ whereis git-daemon
git-daemon: /usr/share/man/man1/git-daemon.1.gz

this is on ubuntu 10.10 x86_64

from this post it seems that you might create the script, althought it is not clear what is the script/command that the manpage is referring to

Does this comes with a separate package now?

i'm following this guide to setting up gitosis.

i run all this on the git server, including creating credentials for my user (in the git server) with the ssh-keygen -t dsa step

now, from some other machine i just want to do

git remote add origin git@GitServer:existingGitRepo.git
git push origin master:refs/heads/master

but this keeps asking for git@GitServer password! What the hell, later on the guide it says to add public keys from other users in there, i presume that amounts to run ssh-keygen -t dsa on the other machine and move the .pub file

what i'm concerned is that i will need to do this for each machine i will need to connect to this git repo??

I've setup an openvpn server which i can access remotely, once it is connected, it creates a tun0 device on both server and client with virtual ip 10.15.119.x. the openvpn server is itself 10.15.119.1.

Question: how do i address other nodes in the lan behind the openvpn server? i can access services on the openvpn server itself with the address 10.15.119.1:(port), but i don't know how to address other nodes not partaking in the openvpn connection that are in the same LAN as the openvpn server: I would hope that such nodes can be addressed from the client node with some other virtual ip in the 10.15.119.x range, and if that is the case, i would only need a way to know what those ip are

i very well could create some iptables and route commands to forward ports to other specific nodes, but i'm sure there has to be a nicer way to do it, addressing directly the nodes

i think i've left an important piece of information out, i didn't thought it might be relevant, but a recent answer made me tought it might; the openvpn is directly connected to the router, and in the router configuration (at 192.168.0.1) i've enabled port forwarding for openvpn port 1194 to the openvpn server, this is how i'm currently connecting remotely

I've tried to run the following on the 192.168.0.100 (secondary server) machine, in order to see if i can solve this by giving it a route to the 10.15.119.x route:

sudo route add -net 10.15.119.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.0.101

(the 192.168.0.101 is the openvpn server address, 192.168.0.100 is the secondary server i want to reach from outside)

i tried this and ping 10.15.119.1 works to reach out to the openvpn server, but ping 10.15.119.6 (my client ip) just fails

so it seems the ping are reaching the server and he replies back, but the packets are dropped before going into the vpn, so i added a line in iptables to log all INPUT and FORWARD packets dropped or rejected and here are what is being filtered in /var/log/syslog

as suggested by Steven, i've added 3 tcpdumps, 2 at the server and one at the client, while from the client, running

with the above setup i am able to:

1) ping from the client to 192.168.0.101 (the openvpn server) 2) ping from the openvpnserver to 10.15.119.6 (the client)

what i am not able to do is ping 192.168.0.100 (secondary LAN server) from the client.

192.168.0.100 actually does reply to the client as tcpdump at the openserver shows, but somehow those packets does not make it back to the client

I had a previously working configuration with the config files used in a previous question

However, I've changed this now to the following configuration using server mode, everything on the logs seem fine, however the client doesn't create any tun interface, so i don't have anything to connect to, presumably, I need to add or push some route commands, but i don't have any idea at this point what I need to do. I've managed to setup openvpn in a test server, configuring the PKI and distributing certificates to test client machines. I can ssh from the client machines to the openvpn server using the IP of the other end of the tun bridge:

However, i am a bit at a lost how to connect/see the IP pf other machines in the same side of the tunnel where the openvpn server is. I assume they get IP in the 10.1.X.X range, but i don't see any of them. Maybe i just don't know how to see what ip is assigned behind the tunnel because i just use ifconfig to know what local ip a machine has, but each machine reports only the tun IP bridge nodes (the client and the server) but no mention about other machines on either end

So, suppose there is a http server at a machine behind the openvpn server, its not on the same machine; how do i reach it or see it from the openvpn clients?

i am trying to setup a IPsec bridge between my home network and my office network. I want to use StrongSwan to encrypt the traffic as IPsec

i am trying to follow this guide

A brief description of the networks:

  • the office network has 3 machines connected to an inexpensive D-link router, 2 of them are linux boxes, and should be able to be accessed from the IPsec network. The other machine is Windows and should not see any IPsec traffic

  • the home network has 2 machines, one is linux, which should be able to access and be accessed from the IPsec network. The other machine is windows and should not see any IPsec traffic

I'm not sure how to go about this, but i have 3 questions that are of high concern right now to me:

1) first a general question; assuming its possible and practical to arrange pre-sharing on secrets outside the internet (which in this case it is) would manual setup of keys be in general safer than setting up IKE or IKEv2?

2) i've read a bit about subnetting, and according to my interpretation of the strongswan documentation, i should set a site-to-site network, but i'm not sure where should i look for the right/left/rightsubnet/leftsubnet ip and masks to configure ipsec. EDIT To be more precise, i am looking at the ifconfig output and trying to decide how to translate this to configure rightsubnet/leftsubnet. What machines constitutes the gateways? Any ideas? sorry if this question is extremely trivial

3) I want to make a test IPsec network at home using virtualbox machines before deploying any setup in the real networks. Would this work? how many virtual machines would i need to make a realistic scenario?
