I'm having a trouble with squid (and dansguardian) in my network that slows web page browsing.

I'm focused now in the DNS queries - i think the DNS can share part of the blame. I've observing my machine with wireshark and the server with tcpdump.

I'm observing that, when i request a page, my machine tries to resolve the name and the squid server also does the same. Is this a normal behaviour ? Shouldn't my machine forward the request to the proxy and then the proxy server resolves the name and makes the request to that web page ?

My Firefox (if I make a mistake in the web page name) stays 30 seconds (i guess this has something to do with dns timeout) blocked (but really blocked) until the proxy server sends a default squid page of domain not found...or until the DNS resolves the query..

My question is only if my machine and my proxy server really have both to make the DNS query or it should only be the proxy server...

I'm having a problem that i cannot understand why or how to solve it. I have a Centos 6.2 server, that's my secondary DNS (bind 8) and DHCP (ISC's dhcp server).

I need to maintain an accurate date because dhcp primary server complains and even stops synchronizing with the secondary server if the date diff is to high and here is the kicker.

In my secondary server i have a cron script that twice a day synchronizes the date and time (or at least it should).

Problem: The machine kind of hangs - kind of hangs because i can ping it, and even ssh to it, but after logging in, i just stays in the prompt and can't do anything else... I solve the problem going to the physical machine, log in and synchronize the date and time manually with ntpdate (or another method such as rdate). As soon as the date and time are ok, the machine works fine again, until it gets date and time unsynchronized again...

Someone knows what can be happening ? can this be an hardware problem, with the motherboard battery or something ?

EDITED: It's a DHCP problem. Since i've shutdown the DHCPD service, the machine is responsive and working perfectly. It really is something with the DHCP load balance configuration. I need to investigate deeply into this, because the configurations are standard. Thank you all for the responses...

I'm asking for help understanding what happened in my situation or what and if I did something wrong.

I have production server running on a Windows 2003 server with MSSQL Express 2005 with an app (production server). I was told to prepare a test machine so we can test a new version of the application running in the production server.

Since the server is virtualized (vmware esxi 4.1), we took it down, cloned it and booted it again. For the cloned version, we changed the name and IP.

Since the new version required SQL Express 2008, I removed the 2005 version and installed the 2008.

When I was ready to restore the database, I went to the production server to create a backup of the database and restore it in the test server...

My surprise when I discovered that, on the production server, the database was gone... deleted and the application was not running giving errors...

How did the database get deleted in the SQL Server 2005? The SA account does not have the same password... the database is the same name, the user of that database is the same and the password is also the same...

When I removed the SQL Server 2005 in the test server, did it remove the database from the production server? How?

Can someone help me to understand what went wrong? Did I delete the database?

I'm in a private domain where the client machines need a proxy server to access the internet. All the machines have an exception where every request to servers in my domain don't need to go through the proxy: don't use proxy to: .mydomain.com, 171.11.0.0/16 and so on...

Well, I now have a machine with an external IP, but I want my clients to access the machine using the dns name: www.mydomain.com.

However, since they need a proxy to go to the internet, but the browser has an exception not to go through proxy when using the domain, they never reach the machine and the connection times out.

My DNS server (bind) has the www machine with the external IP. If I use directly the IP address, it goes to a "under construction" page, because the server outside is configured with a named virtual server and I don't have access to it.

How can I solve this problem? how can I force the machines to go through the proxy even if they are configured not to go ?

if i remove the exception, all the other requests to servers inside will not work...
