I have had a request come through to increase the pool size in IIS which I assume to be the application pool size.

I have attempted to search for more information regarding what the pool size is, what it does, its importance as well as caveats in increasing its size.

Am unsure where to find it in IIS 7 and 7.5 as well as what the default size is.

Does changing the pool size also affect web gardens?

If I were deploying a Windows Server environment, what are the differences between virtual failover, disaster recovery and high availability as well as when would you utilize them?

The man page states that find -name refers to base of file name however I don't follow what that means exactly.

I have come across the terms on several occasions however am unsure what they mean exactly.

Is there a way to mitigate any issues? What should I consider when migrating servers?

I am attempting to redirect anyone visiting a HTTPS page to a HTTP page however the rule seems to fail and not redirect the user at all i.e. displays an untrusted connection and if I accept the untrusted connection it returns a 404 page. The page I am attempting to redirect to exists.

Is there a way I can redirect a user from HTTPS to HTTP? The rule I have is

I am having a difficult time grasping what is the correct way to read the size of the files since each command gives you varying results. I also came across a post at http://forums.devshed.com/linux-help-33/du-and-ls-generating-inconsistent-file-sizes-42169.html which states the following;

du gives you the size of the file as it resides on the file system. ( IE will will always give you a result that is divisible by 1024 ).

ls will give you the actual size of the file.

What you are looking at is the difference between the actual size of the file and the amount of space on disk it takes. ( also called file system efficiency ).

What is the difference between as it resides on the file system and actual size of the fil

Why is that there is a difference in the file sizes as denoted in the screenshot i.e. the total file size under ls -lh is 44k whilst the size of the folder is only 4k? Am I reading it incorrectly?

I am new to the world of Linux and seem to have run into a stumbling block. I know I can extract a specifc archive using the command tar xvfz archivename.tar.gz sampledir/ however how can I extract sampledir/ to testdir/ rather than the path that the archive is in e.g.currently the archive is in the path /tmp/archivename.tar.gz and I would like to extract sampledir to testdir which is in the path /tmp/testdir.

I am new to the world of Linux and in the process of setting up a Linux environment. I stumbled across the tar command as I need to view the contents of a file prior to extracting it and by accident ran the command tar tvf as opposed to tar tvfz. Is there any difference in running either command apart from the the fact that the z option is for gzip files?

I need to setup between 5 - 10 computers to start with for a charity organization which can't offord to be running a dedicated server that maintains group policies for a growing number of staff. Is there a way I can manage policies of each computer without having to physically change the local security policies. The computers run a combination of Windows XP, Vista and 7.

Seeing I am new to the world to networking and need to set up a router, what is the purpose of having multiple SSIDs. Not sure if this qualifies as a separate question (and if it does let me know and I'll post it as a separate question), what is the purpose of having multiple antennas on the router/modem?

I have been championed to install a router that supports multiple SSIDs and being relatively new to the world of networking, would I be able to limit the spread of viruses and the like if I have users connecting to different wireless connections?

I am new to the world of Linux and as part of my learning I would like to understand if it is possible for non-root users to have the ability to run their own backup applications apart from an over-arching backup of the server. If it is possible, what applications (GUI and command line) exist that will allow non-root users to backup their data?

I am new to the world of Linux and am about to make a complete transition from Windows to Linux so I can really get into it. I understand that Linux has a hierarchical structure however am unclear about the following;

• Currently for example I have 2 partitions on my Windows machine i.e. C:\ and D:. C:\ is the boot partition but also the partition where all software is installed e.g. Office, Firefox, etc. D:\ is used to store data such as documents, images, etc. Essentially D:\ store any data of value. Now if my understanding is right in Linux the usr directory would store all my applications. My home directory stores all my data files. Is that correct?
• Assuming if that is correct and I am logged in as a non-root user, I take it I can install software that does not require root permissions. If so, can I choose a directory other than usr to install the software?
• Can I create directories outside of home as a non-root user or am I restricted to just the home directory? I know this depends on the permissions of the user however if I am looking at a user created in a vanilla installation of Linux how would this differ?
• What other directories are used by non-root users?
• Assuming I have Apache installed on the PC, does this mean a non-root user would have to be given permissions to access, update and delete to the var/www. This is a workstation that will be used by several people.

I am new to the world of Linux and recently came across logical volume management however am unsure if I have understood its function correctly. My understanding is that I have 3 physical devices or 3 partitions which I take it have to be primary partitions. These physical devices or partitions then form the volume group. The size of the volume group is a the sum of the physical devices or partitions.Once the volume group has been created, I can create logical volumes which I can grow dynamically depending on the requirements of the server.

My confusion

• Is there a minimum requirement to have 3 physical devices or partitions or can I have 2?

• Do the physical devices or partitions have to be of equal sizing?

• If I have 1 primary partition, 1 Extended partition and 3 logical partitions, can I still have logical volumes?

• If I add a new harddrive to the server, can I increase the size of my volume group and thereby increasing the amount of space available for my logical volumes?

I am new to the world of networking and am having a hard time understanding what a DMZ is. I understand a DMZ is where you place publicly accessible servers such as Web servers, Mail servers, etc. What I am confused about is how a DMZ is setup. Please correct me if my understanding is incorrect.

I am new to the world of server configurations and am having a hard time coming to grasps what a domain is especially in an internal environment. For example I have read and been told the best naming convention to use for an internal domain is domain_name.local. However I have no idea of the purpose of having a domain and what it does?

The second question I have is if I have a registered domain name e.g. example.com which points to a website, how does using the domain name example.com affect me using same name when setting up a web server and mail server?

I am unsure if the same terminology carries across Windows and Linux however if it does, I would like to know how this relates to Linux.

I am new to the world of server configuration and as part of my introduction I am challenging myself setting up several Linux servers within a virtual environment e.g. VirtualBox using a fictional scenario. The question I have in particular relates to the partitioning of Linux servers and the reason as to why they should be set up in that manner. I am looking at setting up the following environments mimicking a real world environment to a degree.

1. I run a small organization and have 3 staff. I require each of them to run Linux Desktops. The distribution I have elected is Ubuntu at this stage. Now what type of partitioning should I configure them so that they meet the criteria of being secure, prevent data loss corruption, avoid logging information from spilling over and allow for them to join some of centralized network should the need arise.

2. I also require to set up a web and mail server that my staff have access to. Now considering I may also have to host other websites and mail boxes of clients, what do I have to consider when partitioning the server e.g. logging, mailbox sizes, scalability, security, hardening and the like.

I would appreciate if someone could advise on the following

1. Is the a reason as to why you are suggesting that particular partitioning?
2. Does it allow for scalability?
3. Is that the best way to secure and harden a server and desktop?

I am not looking for particular applications/software to harden or to secure but rather taking a step back and looking at holistically building an environment that meets the needs now and later. Also this relates to partitioning only and how it relates to security, scalability, etc.

I am new to the world of setting up servers and am baffled by the term hostname and fully qualified domain name (FQDN).
For example, if I want to set up a server that hosts files on the local network i.e. a file server, what would I use a hostname such as myfileserver or something else?
What if I wanted to set up a web server, mail server, etc. that external users could access?
