I don't actually need to perform any operations on the switch. I just need to verify it's there.

I have some remote servers that I need to verify have the blue serial console cable hooked up correctly. Rather than RDC into each of them and copy/configure putty just to hit enter a couple times, I'd like to use "enter-pssession" to remotely connect to PowerShell and access COM1 that way.

I've tried using this, but get no feedback on the console.

I'm troubleshooting cached credentials on Windows 7, specifically Smart Card logins, and I would like to know how I can find out which users currently have their credentials cached on the machine.

I have read How are cached Windows credentials stored on the local machine?

and can see the HKLM/Security/cache registry keys, but they are just hash values.

Machines get added to a security group to prevent them from getting a GPO. I'd like the machines to get removed after 30 days of being in the group. Ideally, I'd like to also be able to generate a report on the machines in the group.

Something like:

MachineA - 10 Days left

MachineB - 29 Days left

When I run:

get-adgroup -filter {displayname -eq 'groupname'} | get-adgroupmember | format-table name, surname, givenname, officephone

The only field that returns is a default property "name". The rest show blank.

Here's the situation. Often I need to tell how a user is getting access to a specific folder. I can see in "Effective permissions" that they have read/write/etc, but because of nested groups I can't immediately tell why.

I'd like a tool/script that I can run that will take the input of a path, and user and tell me how that user has permissions.

Example.

I'm on Server01 and I browse to c:\folder and I see that user MathewC has effective permissions to write, but when I look at the permissions for the folder, I can see that many groups have access to write, but I don't know which of those groups MathewC is a memeber of.

So, the permissions of the folder would look like this:

C:\folder

• Group 01 Read/Write
• Group 02 Read/Write
• Group 03 Read/Write ...
• Group 99 Read/Write

And the tool/script would report back

User MathewC is a memeber of "Group 42" which has Read/Write access.

Or even more complex:

User MathewC is a memeber of "Group humans" which is a member of "Group 42" which has Read/Write access.

I'm using Message Tracking in Exchange 2007, but I don't think emails coming from outside are being logged. I can run a query and see messages internal to the domain, but I get no results when trying to find messages that were sent from outside the domain to someone in the org. Is this enabled by default? Where is this setting controlled?

I'm trying to remotely reboot a hung 2003 server.

The server is pingable but I cannot remote into it.

psshutdown does not work
shutdown -i does not work

What can I do now that the server is back up to make sure one of these solutions will work in the future?

I have two sites connected with 2 encryption devices on either side. Each site has a single flat switch connected to the encrption device on each side. Site A has servers. Site B has workstations. Systems are directly plugged into the switch at their site.

Site A has a class C network. Site B has a different class C network.

Site A has several servers. Server 1 works fine. Server 2 has the issue. Server 2 is Windows 2003 x64

If I connect from workstation 1 to server 1 via remote desktop or file share, everything is nice and fast.

If I connect from server 1 to server 2 via remote desktop or file share, everthing is nice and fast.

If I connect from workstation 1 to server 2 via remote desktop or file share, everything is very slow and often times out. This goes the same for any workstation at site B.

If I ping from workstation 1 to server 2, everything goes through fine. To troubleshoot I have: Changed the IP on the adapter. Removed the adapter and reinstalled the driver. Checked all settings on the adapter to match settings on an identical adapter on a server without the issue. Checked the logs on the switch to check for any errors that would indicate a hardware issue.

Ideas?

I have a list of urls (over 100) of patch files from various sources that I need to download.

I need to create a batch script that will download these files and dump them all into the same directory.

I do not have administrative privileges on the system I need to download to, so it needs to be batch or similer solution.

I would love it if it would echo any errors to the screen and keep rolling on to the next download.

I have Symantec Endpoint Protection (ver 11) on a standalone network that will not have access to the internet. I need to burn updates on CDRs and move them to this network.

I need to know:

• Where do I download the latest updates
• How exactly do I import these updates
• How do I configure the server to use them

Example, to see if KB983590 is installed:

systeminfo | find "KB983590"

But what if I wanted to find out if more then one KB was installed?

I'm looking to find out if a KB is installed via command line.

I'm replacing an SCCM box and new clients are still looking for the old server. So my question is this: What records (NOT client side) exist for SCCM to work? Wins? AD? I need to check each one to figure out what's going on.

Because of a change in networking equipment I might need to set a bunch of machines NICs back to auto negotiate. What's the best way to automate this? I'm thinking an Autoit compiled exe pushed out through group policy or SCCM. Please post your script if you have an example. I'm not sure that all the systems I'm hitting will have the same NICs so something that would reset all known cards to auto would be great.

So we all work on servers, and some of us work around them as well.

The sound is annoying and bad for our hearing.

I wear earplugs when in the datacenter or earbuds which act kind of like earplugs with the bonus of music.

I've seen and played with noise canceling headphones but don't know if they allow you to play music though them, and also they're expensive.

Anyone have a free noise canceling program for Windows? Does one even exist?

How do you deal with the noise?

I could have sworn I saw this question asked. But after looking though every search result for "vi" I'm stumped/lazy.

I've opened a file, made an edit and now I realize it's read only and I've opened it as non-root me.

So, you've got a driver that's giving you problems and you uninstall the driver or device and it automatically gets reinstalled.

• Is there a way to stop windows from keeping a driver in the driver cache?

• Is there an easy way to remove them?

I can find out which files are used, search and remove them manually, but it's a pain.

Is there a way to search in windows explorer for just folders?

I know folders get sorted to the top, but I'm always looking for that extra option.

When I have dircolors defined life is full of... color.

When I pipe ls through less to scroll around I lose the colors.

Any suggestions?
