I am currently working on a network with multiple subnets. So far I have implemented one reverse DNS entry that is a monolithic 10.* record covering everything. Is there any benefit or performance boost for creating a granular structure allowing look-ups to occur quicker? Or is this more work than I need to perform?

I currently received an error from a computer stating that the trust relationship to the domain is not trusted and cannot be verified etc... I was able to log into the system and remove the computer and add it to a "workgroup" I logged back in as the only local account user I know in order to join the computer back to the domain.
Unfortunately when I got to add the computer to the domian, UAC pops up and prevents me from adding to the domain. When I got to disable UAC on the account, same thing; UAC prevents me from accessing the controls. I have no ability to select YES and move forward, clearly this is not the admin account for the local computer. I then used MMC to open user groups and was unsuccessful in joining the account to the administrator group as well as enabling the admin account for log in. In essence I'm logged in as a local guest account and have no access in adding the computer to the domain. I was wondering if there was a way to add the computer back to the domain through the DC so please advise.
Keep in mind, I am working remotely and do not have direct access to this workstation. Otherwise I would have already been able to find my way into the computer under an admin account.
As of recent I decided to open up active directory and clean up things a bit. i.e. removing contacts, users, and specific groups that are no longer used within the organization. After doing so I opened Exchange System Manager, dropped down All Global Address Lists and then right clicked and selected properties over default Global Address List. In previewing this list, this allowed me to see what would show up in our address list through Outlook. All the users and contacts I deleted prior to viewing this were not in the list. (Which is what I wanted).
However, all employees here are using Outlook 2010 and use the Global Address List on a regular basis. When viewing the global address list through Outlook 2010 all of the former users and contacts remained visible within the list. Its as if Outlook hasn't synced up or updated the list according to the Exchange server. How do I get the address list in Outlook to accurately show the addresses and contacts of Exchange Server?
I have recently relocated a database and need to delete any existence of the old database. Since I want to completely remove it, I am simply opening up SQL Server Enterprise Manager, finding the database and trying to delete it. However I am getting the following error:
Error 5070: Database state cannot be changed while other users are using the database. ALTER DATABASE statement failed. sp_dboption command failed.
I don't care about the users or whatever is stopping me from deleting this database. I just need to get rid of it. Please help me figure out how to complete this task.
I am currently running IIS version 6 and desire to create a website with the ending extension of .com/espanol. I have been asked however to add a tilde over the n in espanol.
Can this be done? if so, how do I go about completing this?
A recent development has occurred where a client has requested to move their website from the current hosting server to our in house servers. This website has an SSL associated with it. Can an SSL be migrated, or copied over to a different server to avoid purchasing a new SSL for the website?
Our company is a web development company that host several websites for various clients. We are a smaller company, in fact approximately 10 employees. All employees are on a network and have associated emails through a windows 2003 exchange server. Recently, one of our employers promised a client that we would be able to host their email on our exchange server. Not my idea of a fun project. I have no other means of hosting their email, it must reside on our exchange server and separate from our employee's emails as well.
We basically need to host their email on our server. I have been told that there is the capability of this set up in the core of MS Exchange but lack the knowledge on how to do this. Do I have to set up a new domain for the clients so that it wont be under our domain? I also need to make sure the following criteria is met...
- Hosted email
- Web Access Email
- Mobile access to email (on supported device)
Does meeting these needs then push me into the area of POP3? If so how can I take care of this at the same time? Can anyone help me figure out how to accomplish this in MS Exchange?
I have recently been approached by an employee who claimed he was not getting all of his email sent from our server. Therefore I opened up exchange system manager and navigated through message history. I found out that only 2 internal emails were receiving the automated messages despite the fact that 4 email addresses were listed in the TO: field of the email.
For example, the email lists recipient A,B,C,D's email in the TO: field but only sends the message to recipient A and B.
Another piece worth noting is the emails are Sent via the SmtpClient class in Visual Basic, in .NET 2.0
Any ideas as to why the email is only being sent to certain clients email address's?
I am currently new to the world of administration and have somewhat of a decent knowledge on networking. However I want to improve and advance my knowledge within the field. I have been informed the taking certified classes is a waste of time and money. Instead I have been told to read up and study on your own and practice with test computers about building a functional network.
Does anyone have any suggestions on books to read, websites to visit, or programs to use that will help expand my knowledge base within the subject of computer networking?
An employee has just recently quit. I have access to our domain control of which active directory sits upon. Unfortunately the employee did not leave us with his password to log into his local machine. Is there a way for me to go into active directory and change his password or allow myself into his box under his login credentials to clean up his account?
I currently have 4 server that sit behind a firewall and do not have internet access. In fact they are locked down pretty tight. The 5th server on the network (the domain control) however, has outside/internet access. I need to apply updates to all 5 of these servers. I cannot for one second allow an internet connection to the other servers unfortunately. (Contract reasons). It is my understanding that I can run a command within each server that allows me to check for the most recent updates on that server and then download the required updates from the internet server. If that makes sense.
I have heard something about MBSA allowing this capability or something along that nature. Are there any other suggestions I may want to look into to get the servers updated behind a firewall with the most recent updates? Also what command line prompts would I look into using to make this project work?
I have just recently graduated college with an MIS degree. However, I feel that I can expand my knowledge base about networking. I want to become certified in networking either through Microsoft or Cisco. Where can I find online classes or programs to become certified in networking or with any other prestigious company I may not know about.
Any suggestions on the best way or approach in getting certified?
I have created a batch file to copy and zip up an entire drive of data on my server. I have selected the D:\ drive to be copied and zipped. However, I have one problem. When I run the batch file, only certain files from the D:\ drive are being copied over. Why am I having problems transferring all of the drive over to my backup source?
I have set up a job within MSQL studio to backup all of my databases to a specific file. Then I take that file, compress it, and send it to a backup device. I am currently hoping to make this entire process automated on a weekly basis. However, here is my problem. The job I have created in MSQL Studio currently runs a full backup of the databases, however, it does not overwrite the old data. I have been through the wizard time and time again but can't figure out how to me the process overwrite the old files. The purpose of doing this is to save space on the server.
Can anyone help me figure out how to make the backup job overwrite old files?
I am currently trying to free up a tape unit within my removable storage tape drive. However I continue to get the Data error (cyclic redundancy check) error. Any suggestions as to what this means or how to avoid getting this error?
I am receiving the error from Windows Backup utility on a windows 2003 server. I am using 4mm DDS4 tapes 20GB/40GB on a Quantum DAT Tape Drive.
I just recently bought 8 brand new tapes for the purposes of backing up my data to tape drives. I put in one of the brand new tapes in the drive and opened up Backup Utility because this is the program i was instructed to use. I stepped through the hoops on setting up the media for a recurring backup and when I went to execute the backup for the first time I received the following message...
Required Media Missing There is no free media available with the selected type. Add unused media or click Cancel to end the operation. Note: It may take up to 60 seconds to recognize new media.
Remember I have inserted a brand new tape for this process. What could possibly be going wrong? I did run across this article however that says I need to prepare the media. I follow these steps and when I right-click on the media to select "prepare" the only option that shows up is "free." In otherwords I cant even prepare my media for backup utility to use properly.
Any suggestions or solutions? This has been way more of a hassle than I have anticipated.
I have been assigned the task of setting up a proper tape drive backup system. Essentially, I will be using "Windows Backup Utility" to run the process. I currently have a Quantum DAT Tape Drive connected to the server that I wish to back up. I have also just recently bought brand new tapes for the job.
How do I go about formatting a new tape so that in future uses when it is inserted into the drive, the data will be erased and replaced with the newer backups? Is there a specific way they need to be formatted or titled in for the drives to work properly?
I have just recently been hired at a web development company right out of college. I am currently struggling with a task and was hoping to get some help with operating a firewall.
I currently have 2 IIS servers and 2 SQL servers on the same domain. However, there is a Cisco ASDM firewall sitting between the IIS and the SQL servers. I have created a batch job on the IIS server to zip up and send files over to the SQL server. (For backup purposes). However I received the following message when trying to manually transmit files via explore between the servers...
"This usually means that a firewall is running somewhere between the two computers and is blocking "File and printer sharing (SMB)" If you have access to this firewall then configure the firewall to allow connections through TCP port 445.
Being new at networking and especially with Firewalls, how do I go about setting up this rule within my firewall ASDM?
I currently have a server configuration that allows me to schedule backup jobs and copy the specified folders to tape backup on 4MM DDS tapes. Unfortunately this is my first experience with tape backup. (old school I know). However, I successfully set up a job to run on a schedule and I have inserted the tape into the tape drive and have manually cleared the data. Whenever I go into the backup utility and select the job I want it to run I get the following message...
There is no free media available with the selected type. Add unused media or click Cancel to end the operation. Note: It may take up to 60 seconds to recognize new media.
The report on the failed status comes up with the following...
Cannot locate the specified media or backup device. This backup operation will terminate.
I am confused as to why the files are not being copied over to the tape backup even after I have removed all data from the media.
Any suggestions?
I have a Windows 7 Professional machine that has accidentally been removed from the active directory on the domain controller. Therefore the network does not recognize this machine and the machine cannot recognize the network. I understand that I need to log onto the local Windows machine in order to add the computer back to the domain. However, the local administrator has been disabled from that Windows machine.
Is there a way to work around this? In other words, how can I get back into the local machine without having to wipe away the OS and start over?
