Our organization has two types of accounts for server administrators. Both are individual user accounts in Active Directory tied to a given employee. However, they only give system (server and database) access using our admin-{user id} account. There are three ways to launch SQL Server Management Studio.

1. Right click SSMS executable > Run As Administrator
2. Shift + Right click SSMS executable > Run As Different User
3. Click SSMS executable

For option #2, I get the following error after the login dialog launches and I enter my admin-{user id} credentials. What is required to set up the default server for this option to work and successfully launch the SQL Server Management Studio IDE, both on the client side and server side?

In Wireshark version 1.12.4, I am trying to filter out packet messages with an SSDP protocol. When I clicked the Expression button next to the Filter field, and selected "HTTP" (as Field Name) and "is present" (as Relation), I still get SSDP. Most of the messages are SSDP, so it's difficult to troubleshoot request and response packets I care about with SSDP in the list.

I've set up the AWS Free Tier, and configured a Windows Server. I took the defaults pretty much. There was 1 security group it created with 3 security rules it provided by default, and I didn't change anything. It looks like it added SQL Server's default TCP port of 1433, and IIS default web site port of 80, and Windows RDP port for remote desktop. I don't know what the IP addresses will be since I read that EC2 automatically assigns a public and private IP address per instance.

Why is it complaining about the security when the rules don't even have specific IP addresses? How can I fix this?

There is a very annoying problem with a Citrix Receiver window when I started remote desktop'ing into a Windows 7 machine. This was not a problem when remote desktop'ing into Windows XP.

My Windows mouse pointer is invisible when the Citrix Receiver window (with Windows 7 not focused). But when the window does have focus, I can clearly see the mouse pointer as I move the mouse pointer across that window.

How can I make it such that you can always see the mouse pointer? Do you think it's a problem with the way Windows renders the mouse, or would this be a Citrix issue? I'm thinking the former.

Why is this annoying? ... because I sometimes click in the wrong spot, which could compromise my workflow in Windows if I'm in the middle of doing work remotely.

I am using the Citrix Receiver in Windows 8, and on Windows XP on another PC. I often log into work from home and am unable to span the session to dual monitors like one can easily do when using "mstsc" (Remote Desktop) by using "mstsc /span". Can this be achieved with either setting options on the server (Citrix server) or on the machines the client (Citrix Receiver) is installed on? I don't have access to the server, but if there is a way, I can put in an employee request for this.

At work, I often use the "mstsc" command to use the Microsoft Terminal Services Client and remote to another machine. In my case, I'm using Windows XP (call this box 1) to connect to a Windows Server 2008 box (call this box 2). I'd like to be able to span RDP across multiple monitors using "mstsc /span", but this does not work for me. How can I troubleshoot or fix this? Often times people answer telling how it should work, but I'd prefer if you can describe how to troubleshoot my issue, or what to look for.

My investigation so far:

I read in the link below, that dual monitors is only possible when using RDP6. I'm assuming this has something to do with the graphics card. Does box 1 or box 2 need RDP6? And how would I check?

I'm struggling with uninstalling IIS from Windows Server 2008. I went into Server Manager > Roles > Remove Roles > unchecked IIS > that prompted me to also remove dependencies. Every time the "Resume Configuration Wizard" continues after a restart, I keep getting another dialog to restart. After 3 tries, it says it failed to uninstall. Note, the 3 try failure screen shot was from previous attempts to uninstall WAS (Windows Process Activation Service). And a dependency for WAS is IIS. However, I get the 3 try failure with this set as well. What am I doing wrong?

What is the likely cause of this, if the command is run on Windows Server 2008? It appears that this account is an administrator on this box. I'm running the Windows command line as an administrator also.

I'm running a Pentaho Kettle Kitchen batch scripts on Windows Server 2008. When I launch the batch file, the Windows Command prompt pops up and then disappears. I've changed all files in the folders being accessed to non-read only and gave full permissions to Administrator.

What is likely the problem?

How do I troubleshoot this sort of thing on Windows?

Normally when setting up IIS 7, I'm used to allowing permissions to user IIS APPPOOL\{application pool name} on the root folder of my web application(s). I also give permissions to IUSR (or the IIS_IUSRS user group. (Note, in Windows Server 2008, I found that IUSR isn't in that group by default, so I added it).

In Windows Server 2008, I cannot find user IIS APPPOOL\{application pool name} under Security under the Windows Folder Properties. I'm using Windows Authentication in ASP.NET. I'm receiving a 401.1 on the page in Internet Explorer 8 after getting the authentication prompt. Mozilla Firefox also gave me a Windows authentication prompt, and got me into the site fine. Same with Google Chrome.

How can I solve this one?

Can someone give me a use case for setting up a Windows Server 2008 Task Scheduler task (we'll call this "test") that completes (action completed is task=201) with an error (result code=2)? This is event trigger code for another task (called "notification" that sends out an email based on the event history of the "test" task.

I've got use cases for tasks that opens a program successfully and when a program fails to find the program. I'm just trying to think of how I can test a scenario when it finds the program, but something fails with warnings or errors.

So the command below works if I reboot my computer. But whenever I VPN to a certain customer's network on Windows 7, I lose my mapped drive. And when I try to re-establish the mapped drive (even after closing the VPN connection), I get this error at the Windows command prompt. FYI: I have another Virtual Machine running Windows XP and this never happens on there.

Background:

I'm trying to get the Live Demos of Telerik's Rad Controls for ASP.NET AJAX working on my local machine in IIS 7. I'm getting an error when I view the ComboBox demo.

Error I get:

Server Error in '/' Application .... CREATE DATABASE permission denied in database 'master'. An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:\Users\MacGyver\MyDocuments\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\TelerikDemos\Telerik\RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX Q2 2011\Live Demos\App_Data\Northwind.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

I'm on Windows 7.. slightly different clicks, but same problem I'm guessing. I get to the "Advanced Security Settings for App_Data" window, and I have two check boxes. Initially, the "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent" (box 1) box is checked. But the "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" (box 2) is unchecked. When I try checking box 2, and click "Apply", it doesn't stay checked. I'd like to be able to setup faxing by running a virtual fax modem. I don't understand how fax messages are sent and received, and I don't know much about COM, or how the fax modem communicates with a fax service. I've read forums out there, but I haven't found a very good explanation on this topic, nor a good tutorial on how to set it up with open source products. If anyone knows of something that's cheap to buy but works excellently, then by all means, let me know. Also, will I need to purchase a dedicated phone number (land line) for setting this up? I want to be able to receive and send faxes. I might be on the wrong track here, because I wasn't sure if faxes could be received virtually either. That's another question I had. If this post is horrible and should be split out into separate questions, let me know and I will do so. I'm open to running things in Linux or Windows. I will vote up for any feedback what so ever. The first thing that works well I will mark as the answer. Trust me, if you give me some good feedback, it shouldn't take me long.

I am creating directories, and writing files to a shared folder within my web application that is being hosted on Windows Server 2008. I am running the application pool with an identity of ApplicationPoolIdentity.

To give you an idea of my setup so far.. I've set permissions to the root of my web application root directory to two different users: "IUSR" and "IIS APPPOOL\MYPOOL". I'm using the name "MYPOOL" as the name of my application pool, so it's easy to reference.

The application is unable to modify and write to a shared folder. I right clicked the shared folder that I'm creating directories in and writing to, and clicked on the "Security" tab. Then I clicked "Edit". Under objects, I checked "Computer". Then under LOCATION, I've tried the machine/server running my web application. I wasn't able to find my "MYPOOL" user however under the users. I tried to follow this link, but it wasn't very complete. I don't know which user to use. I continue to get a System.IO exception because it doesn't have permissions. Once I know which user to use, I will have to give "Modify" permissions to the "ExportPath" directory.

For a quick test, I made a dummy page called FilePermissionsTest.aspx, and put some code to write a file to create a directory and write a file in my Page_Load event of the code behind. But I haven't gotten far enough to test it because it won't write the file.

I have a network traffic question, that I may get a lot of answers for. At work, I'm VPNing to a client's internal network where they have their stage SQL database. Every time I stage development (fixes/enhancements), I like to do a round of quick QA. When I run SQL queries in SQL Server Management Studio, things don't seem slow. But when I run their web application with the stage version of the web.config by using my local build, the lag is VERY slow when compared to using our company's dev SQL database web.config. file.

To give you a comparison, I start counting 1-1000, 2-1000, etc.. for one particular page. It takes 1.5 seconds to load the page with our dev web.config. But when using the stage web.config, I counted slightly longer than 8 seconds. I'm starting to move the application modules to using AJAX so I see some improvements on those pages, but the pages still have to load. So this really slows down my testing if I release a large package of updates.

If you can recommend some tools of diagnosing this slowness/lag, that's what I'm interested in. Also, if you can describe how I can troubleshoot it, that's what I'm looking for. I'm an .NET application developer, not a network administrator, so I wouldn't know where to begin on this one.

Apparently, SQL Server Management Studio is also slow, so it's definitely the SQL connection across the networks. I did a quick ping on my local box when VPN'ed to the network where the *.234 Windows Server 2008 box sits. I then did another one from a different machine on the same network as *.235. So maybe there is no answer to this. They're using a T1 line, so could that be the issue. These times from the ping are extremely different.

On Remote Desktop on different machine, but different network machine. Pinging from same network as *.234 box:
