I am not really sure which route to take. Here is my current setup.

We host our web server on RackSpace Cloud (moved from EC2) Previously we hosted our own name servers, now we use RS (RackSpace) name servers.

Our mail server is hosted locally running on an ATT T1. ATT Will not setup a PTR unless they are hosting the domain. So they have to "delegate" control and whoever they delegate to can create the PTR. RS will not create a PTR because they said their Reverse DNS isn't setup to run that way.

We have a few domains, big domains that are our primary customers, rejecting our mail because of this issue.

So just to clarify, this is our setup:

Domain Registrar is at Godaddy.com DNS Name Servers point to RS DNS Mail is hosted locally via ATT T1, ATT Delegates DNS authority for our IP Block to our OLD name servers at ns1 and ns2.mycompany.com. (These no longer exist as we host with RS now)

Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated. I have been dealing with this for 3 days now and feel like a complete newb. It's driving me mad. So mad I will be willing to pay a consultant to assist in this matter.

The Error that our mail server is giving is:

delivery temporarily suspended: host or domain not found. name service error for name=domain.mil type=mx:host not found, try again

I am having a hell of a time getting our PTR record right.

Our current PTR zone looks like this:

For some reason the only thing that works is the 97.96/28. When this line is in there it actually says I have a PTR record when reporting from intodns.com. If I remove that line, it says I have no PTR.

I have followed instructions from http://www.philchen.com/2007/04/04/configuring-reverse-dns and when I follow those instructions intodns.com says I have no PTR.

When it does work with the line 97.96/28., the PTR kicks back as (from intodns.com) : 

97.xxx.xxx.xxx.in-addr.arpa ->  mail.domain.com.xxx.xxx.xxx.in-addr.arpa

Which is, to my knowledge, an incorrect PTR. I want it to just kick back as mail.domain.com, without the xxx.xxx.xxx.in-addr.arpa extension.

I have tried everything I can think of but I can't fix it. I can't help but think it's one of those things that is so stupid and simple I'm going to do the ol'facepalm.

So I installed 10.04 on Hyper-V R2. While booting up the VM I have a ping -t xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (The Ubuntu Guest IP address) and it actually gets a response for about 10 seconds after you see the login prompt on ubuntu. Then about the time it takes to login you start getting a request timed out. I disabled UFW and rebooted and still nothing. Same results. Any ideas?

It is a legacy adapter as well.

So we received a lot of great software from Microsoft's Bizspark program. This in turn started our use of Hyper-V. Overall I really enjoy the product. However it is not the greatest solution for Linux VM's.

Is it a horrible idea to mix and match virtual solutions? Say Hyper-V for strictly Windows VM's and maybe Virtualbox or VMWare for linux VM's?

I'd hate to create an infrastructure that later I regret and have to recover from.

Thanks. (Not on the same machine of course. VBox would be on it's own machines separate from Hyper-V boxes)

So I would like to limit say:

www.website.com/folder to local addresses only on say, a network of 192.168.0.x via .htaccess. But I would still want the entire www.website.com to be accessable. I have read you can do this w/ the .htaccess file in the /folder but I am uncertain of the code to put into the .htaccess file. How would I do this?

We work with a lot of proprietary information that we do not want compromised. Is jungledisk any more or less secure than say backing up to a tape drive and using Iron Mountain's off-site storage?

I know JD totes this AES-256, but I still believe it is only as secure as the sysadmins at the S3 Datacenters. But then again your offsite Iron Mountain storage tapes are under the same risk. It's only as secure as the people holding your tapes are.

What are your thoughts on this?

I hope this is an ok question for SF.

We are purchasing some Win7 copies and supposedly they can only sell upgrade licenses in VL, or OEM licenses individually, which would mean I get the media and a sticker for each license.

We previously had 25 copies of Vista, so we are purchasing 25 Upgrade Licenses for Win7 in VL format.

Going forward, we need to purchase 25 more copies which would be full installs (as we did not previously own a total of 50 licenses, only 25) So they are telling me I would need to purchase 25 OEM licenses. I don't want to constantly track 25 stickers. I'd much rather have 1 VL key. Is my rep confused? Can I actually just purchase 25 more Upgrades of Win7 in VL format and that will be ok? He tells me they are the same cost, 1 lic of VL is $144, and 1 lic of OEM (includes media and 1 lic sticker) is $144.

I think my rep is confused. But I am not sure. I am hoping to run into a MS expert on here.

I am preparing to undergo a pretty massive IP restructure. Currently we reside on one subnet. 192.168.0.x / 255.255.255.0.

Gateway + Firewall = 192.168.0.15 (T1 and ADSL tie into this)

Active Directory DC + DNS + DHCP (I know, all on one server, big no-no, its 10 people locally) 192.168.0.150

Backup DC1 = 192.168.0.151

Backup DC2 = 192.168.0.152

Mail Server = 192.168.0.43

I have a mixed environment of windows and linux boxes.

DHCP Scope hands out 192.168.0.170-254

3 Static IP Network Printers

About 10 other misc linux/windows servers.

I would like to set it up so that all static addresses (servers, printers, etc.) are on 192.168.10.x, and all DHCP addresses are on 192.168.15.x.

However, when I was going through testing I noticed something that really made me think I'm underestimating the size of this project. I was assigning a static address to a server 2003 box and I was giving it an address of 192.168.10.33, then I entered the gateway of 192.168.0.15. It warned me that the gateway was on a different subnet. Will I need a different gateway for each subnet? 192.168.10.x and 192.168.15.x? Can I just setup an IP address alias in my firewall so it spits out 192.168.10.15 as well as 192.168.15.15?

In my mind, for this restructure I simply setup the DHCP scope in MS DHCP, reconfigure all the servers so their static addresses are 10.x instead of 0.x, reboot all the workstations. DNS will sort itself out on its own. Setup the FW/Gateway so that it has the static of 10.x w/ an alias of 15.x. Is that a safe assumptiong? Also accounting for about 10+ hours of crazy problems that usually come w/ anything like this.

Any help or links to guides would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

For some reason computers using my endian firewall as the gateway are unable to access any internal machines, when using the external address (setup in Endian Port Forwarding)

For example:

Server with internal address of 192.168.0.210, and external address of 10.0.0.20. When trying to go to 10.0.0.20 on a normal workstation I get a firefox error of:

Network Timeout
The server at 10.0.0.20 is taking too long to respond.

However I can access the internal address with no problems.

Where and how would I fix this so that my internal machines using the endian IP as the gateway can access local machines with their external addresses with no problems?

All external machines are able to access the external addresses and be routed to their internal addresses with no problems. But ONLY external machines.

I have a server with a faulty power button that likes to reboot itself. Usually there are warning signs, like the acpid log file in /var/log starts spamming garbage for about 10hrs or so.

Is there an easy way I can have something monitor the acpid log and email me when it has new activity?

I wouldn't consider myself extremely advanced so any "guides" you may have for accomplishing something like this would be very helpful and much appreciated. Thank you!

I am working to implement something called ProcessMaker.

It wants to have its files reside in /opt/processmaker/workflow/public_html.

However my main site has its files in VirtualServer under /home/username/public_html/

How do I go about linking mainsite.com/processflow with the mainsite.com being under /home/username/public_html, and the /processflow actually residing in /opt/processmaker/workflow/public_html.

I hope that makes sense.

Can you help me with my software licensing question?

So when I go into the Volume Licensing Service Center and review our current used/available MAK activations, it says #/50. (the # being the number of our currently used). What I'm curious about, so far we only put vista on like 10 of our boxes. But over time, if we format a machine for some reason, then activate it, I'm assuming it will then in a way consume 2 keys? So what happens when we max the 50? Does that mean we have to fork over some more cash to M$? If so that's pretty lame.

What would be the best hardware solution with 3+ Ethernet ports to install Endian Firewall Community Edition on? I am currently using a Jetaway mini-ITX enclosure with a Jetaway board and am not happy with it.

I cannot boot the machine w/o the network cables UNPLUGGED, otherwise the links for some reason will not be active. So I have to boot the box, then plug the cables in. On top of that for some reason it does not detect the PHY ethernet NIC.

So, any ideas on alternative small form factor hardware?
