I've read the answers to a similar question, but I'd like to ask it here with a very narrow scope. Assuming Windows 8, not enterprise (which means no services for unix applications providing native NFS capabilities), how can I mount an NFS share?
edit: Third party software is acceptable, and the only answer, I think.
I do storage, so I do a lot of fiber. I am also unlucky enough to have a patch panel with single strands, so when someone else does patching for me, it's usually a mystery which of the two strands I'm holding will end up being the tx (send) and which will be the rx (receive). We have a color code: the yellow one is supposed to be "hot". It's followed, accidentally, just under half the time.
I know that the vast majority of active cables in my datacenter are sending visible, harmless light. That's why I've seen a lot of people looking into one or the other cable, knowing that it's safe. The problem is I also have very few very dangerous lasers that I wouldn't recommend shooting into someone's hand, let alone their eye. One of them is outside the visible wavelength and strong enough to be read 80KM away.
A light meter will tell you whether a strand is lit up, but we only have one, and it's usually being used by someone else. Shining it on a paper or a hand is another technique, but I have trouble seeing it. I've seen little cards some people carry around, but I don't have one and don't want to carry something around I only need once a week.
What's the best way to tell whether a cable has light on it without requiring special equipment?
How can I manage the system files on a filer or vFiler in Netapp? There are a couple of really important system files in every filer that it's really only feasible to manage by hand. While there are sometimes tools to manage them from a GUI, it's inconsistent. I find myself managing the following things by hand the most:
I have two Netapp filers running ONTAP 7-mode with some volumes on the main one replicated to the secondary one on another site. I need to regularly test my DR, but I can't break the replication during the test. Sometimes they're quite long, and a lot of changes happen to the main system's replicated volumes that would be lost, if we had a real DR during a DR test. Also, I'd risk falling behind by a couple of days of replication, which could take a lot longer to catch up on.
I want to clone the replicated volumes to test them, however the snapmirror targets are read-only, so I can't take a snapshot for the clone.
My V-Series NAS is running ontap 7.3, and gets all its disk from a SAN. LUNs are provisioned to the Netapp, which puts them into a raid-0. The SAN itself, of course, uses RAID with scrubbing and prefailure analysis. Basically, we use the SAN to handle all the disk, and the NAS as a file front-end. There are no Netapp native disks- even the filer's root aggregate is on the SAN.
That said, right now the weekly scrubbing that Netapp does is on (default):
nas> options raid.scrub.enable
raid.scrub.enable on
Since the SAN takes care of its own disks, and since these are all LUNs that would only ever all fail at the same time, can I safely disable scrubbing? Does it do something more than disk checks?
I have a Brocade FC switch that I'd like to do some zoning on. I have a build file with too many lines to copy-paste into a normal interactive session, and I have ssh set up with pre-shared keys between the switch and my unix management server. I do not have expect and would prefer to stick to straight ssh and bash.
I've tried sending the commands individually, however it fails because each ssh command is an individual session, and all uncommitted commands are flushed as soon as the session is dropped.
I've tried this:
cat testbuildfile | ssh -tt user@switch
It almost works, in that it runs all the commands in my build file, however it leaves me with a session on the Brocade I can't use when they're finished. I have my Brocade command prompt, but if I enter anything, it hangs and I have to ctrl-c to get back to my unix server.
I know that I can put the commit command into my build file, but I'd rather have a chance to check and validate the work before committing it. Ideally, I'd like to have it run my command file and then leave me logged into the session it started for me to check and then manually commit the commands. Can I do this?
edit: running scripts on the Brocade switches is not possible without an elevated shell that would void the warranty.
I have twin Linux servers that should be configured identically, however ssh commands to one of them are failing for commands that require a path that's specified in ~/.bashrc. For example, I can use a command like pwd both interactively and through ssh, but if I try running a program that's located in an application bin folder, it only works in an interactive shell for one of the servers.
The /etc/profile and /etc/environment file on both servers are identical, however $BASH_ENV is set to ~/.bashrc on the server that is working properly. I want to set $BASH_ENV on the server that's not working, but I'd prefer to set it in the same location as it's set in the working server. What are the places that Linux will run at the time of a non-interactive login, such as an ssh command from another computer?

The line in /etc/passwd for the user specifies /bin/bash on both servers. The ~/.bash_profile file for both servers is identical, and contains if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then . ~/.bashrc; fi. The only difference between the systems is that $BASH_ENV is a null string on the server that's not working, and I can't find where it's been set in the server that's working.

I have storage that allows me to thin provision my volumes presented to the clients. Is this safe? What are the best practices?
I'm getting a bunch of brand new condor 3 based switches and these things have a feature I'd like to use called port mirroring. Essentially, a mirror port can be configured to show all traffic being sent between two devices logged into the fabric (like between a storage port and an NPIV WWN, for example).
I've looked into proper SAN taps before through Virtual Instruments' VirtualWisdom, and have experience with a Finisar tap and XGIG for troubleshooting, but this mirror port looks like it can be used to do the same thing. Brocade seem to have no documentation I can find describing how to use the data, though.
My question is what kind of setup would I need to be able to properly use the data from a mirror port? I imagine it could run on a server with an HBA that is plugged into this port?
If I'm running VMWare 5.x on FC [edit] LUNs presented from a Netapp running ontap 8.x in 7 mode, what steps should I take to ensure that the VMs can withstand a worst possible case cluster node failover? HBA settings? ESX settings? Modifications to the VMs' settings? I know this is all handled with the host kit from Netapp, but we want to know what it's doing and/or do it ourselves.
A cf takeover on Netapp is usually quite fast, but can in some cases run up to 3 minutes.
I'm writing a script in AIX 5.3 that will loop through the output of a df and check each volume against another config file. If the volume appears in the config file, it will set a flag which is needed later in the script. If my config file only has a single column and I use a for loop, this works perfectly. My problem, however, is that if I use a while read loop to populate more than one variable per line, any variables I set between the while and the done are discarded.
For example, assuming the contents of /netapp/conf/ExcludeFile.conf are a bunch of lines containing two fields each:

In this example, thresholdFlag will always be 0, even if the volume appears in the file and its utilization is greater than the threshold. I could have added an echo "setting thresholdFlag to 1" in there, see the echo, and it'll still echo a 0 at the end.
Is there a clean way to do this? I think my while loop is being done in a subshell, and changes I make to variables in there are actually being made to local variables that are discarded after the done.
I have a v3200 with a 4 port FC expansion card. I am trying to switch one (or all, doesn't matter) of those ports from target to initiator. When I execute fcadmin config, I get:

Those are only the onboard ports, and I can't find a way to make it show me the ports on the card (4a, 4b, 4c, and 4d). I'm running 8.0 in 7 mode, and the manual claims (page 22) to support a combination of initiator and target ports on my card.

I have a large volume containing only an NFS share I'd like to split up. 500GB of it (three specific subdirectories) needs to be put into a new volume. I'd like to avoid writing this data again. Here's what I think would work, but a colleague thinks that it won't work:
The way I understand it, when you split off a FlexClone, only the WAFL blocks with more than one pointer will get copied. In theory, I shouldn't have any (or many) of those. I'd be left with two non-linked volumes containing completely different data, and none of the 500GB would have been written.
Is this the case? If I split a FlexCloned volume after deleting some data from the source volume, will it copy those blocks?
I have recently consolidated ISL ports on a brocade switch, and am trying to reclaim ports that are no longer connecting the switches. The one part I'm not sure about is how to get rid of the long distance parameter (in my case, LS). For example, to set up an ISL, I would execute:

How can I change that "LS" back to ".."? The manual page for portcfglongdistance offers me the choice between: L0, LE, LD, and LS.
I have a pair of Brocade switches with ISLs running between them. I'd like to know if it's possible to be alerted when one of the ISL ports goes from an E_PORT to anything else (particularly a U_PORT). I am about to write a /sh script on a management box that will run a portshow command every 15 minutes and email me if it doesn't see what I need it to, but there has to be an easier way. How do you monitor your ISL ports?

This is a Canonical Question about iSCSI we can use as a reference.
iSCSI is a protocol that puts SCSI commands as payload into TCP network packets. As such, it is subject to a different set of problems than, say, Fibre Channel. For example, if a link gets congested and the switch's buffers are full, Ethernet will, by default, drop frames instead of telling the host to slow down. This leads to retransmissions which leads to high latency for a very small portion of storage traffic.
There are solutions for this problem, depending on the client operating system, including modifying network settings. For the following list of OSs, what would an optimal iSCSI client configuration look like? Would it involve changing settings on the switches? What about the storage?
I am looking for some publicly available comparisons between 2.5 inch drives and 3.5 inch drives. What I had assumed is that a 2.5 inch 15k drive and a 3.5 inch 15k drive would have identical performance, however I was shown some benchmarks recently claiming that 2.5 inch 15k is considerably faster, and 10k 2.5 inch is about the same speed as 15k 3.5 inch. The problem is that these benchmarks can't be reproduced by most people because of the platform they were done on, and more to the point, it's the underlying disk that I was hoping to compare.
Basically, will a mainframe using some number of 3.5 inch 15k drives right now perform about the same as a mainframe using an identical setup of 10k 2.5 inch drives?
I'm trying to create a raid 6 array on a VNX 5100 from EMC, however am unable to create one with 7 drives. We have 8 total, and I immediately carved one out for hot sparing, leaving me 7 data drives. I can create one with 6 or 8, not 7. I am also unable to make a raid with 5 drives, which leads me to believe that odd numbers of disks are not eligible for raid 6. Raid 5 gives me no such issues.
Raid 6 should not have a dependency on having an even number of drives. Its only dependency should be meeting the minimum number of 4 drives. Can anyone help me find a way around this?
I've got a NFS share on a Netapp and a laptop running windows 7 enterprise that needs to mount the volume. I've installed all the NFS services on windows 7, and am able to mount and browse the drive. The problem is that I don't have access to modify files on the volume.
Googling around, I think this is because I need to map my windows user to a unix user, but all searches for User Name Mapping Service indicate that this is not something I can do on the windows 7 laptop.
Does anyone know what I have to do to get this laptop to access that NFS share? What about other windows laptops?
