What is the threshold in Windows 2008 when the local clock differs from an NTP source and it will not synchronize?
For example, if the local time is off > 2 days, will NTP still sync? Is there a value that can be tweaked?
No Domain/Active Directory involved here.
We've got a system that is running RHEL 4 AS 32 bit (2.6.9-42.ELsmp #1 SMP) with 20GB of RAM and 8 dual core processors that runs a Oracle 10g database.
This is overkill, but I am having trouble explaining why. I am also wondering if there could be memory related problems due to the disproportionate system configuration- could the OS could be spending too much resources scheduling the CPUs, etc.?

Some of our application owners are saying several processes are taking double the time to run that they should.
This one has our head scratching.
We cannot understand why some operations are taking double the time on Server 1 than they take on Server 2.

As expected, the operation of writing a 1GB file is quicker on Server 1

We're doing a virtual desktop pilot and I was wondering what kind of SAN storage is commonly used. I've heard conflicting reports of SAS/SATA disks or even SSD or large read/write cache settings.
Requirements:
I've reviewed VMware's Server and Storage Sizing For VMware VDI: A Prescriptive Approach and they are using 7200 RPM SATA drives for a similar workload while colleagues in similar situations were seeing poor performance:
We are using 60 SATA spindles for 20 concurrent connections. We had it running on 20 spindles but it was too slow.
I don't know who/what to believe. Are there any other good resources out there? What are other's experience?
we are in the process of evaluating VMware View 4.5 and I have a question about integrating it into the Terminal Services environment that is already in place.
Can the VMware View Connection Broker serve as a connection broker for TS farms with a TS session director running at the same time? Is it best to choose one broker over another? Can the TS Director function as a broker for View Desktops (I don't think so, but worth asking)?
If we chose VMware's broker, what objections do you think our TS farm administrators might have? Do you have to put the View Agent on each TS server?
We already have a decent sized deployment of TS (3 farms, up to 4 servers each) and a Terminal Services Session Director but some of our use cases are requiring VMware View for CAD software, etc. - I'd like to be able to integrate the two if at all possible.
What about licensing issues? Would you have to double purchase View/TS licenses in this case?
I'm attempting to use includeAllDisks in my snmpd.conf for RHEL 4 and RHEL 5 machines, but no data is being returned on the Cacti Data Query.
snmpwalk isn't giving me any results.

I am wanting to deploy this to many systems using the same snmpd.conf (via Satellite). The disk configuration varies among systems and manually configuring snmpd.conf is not an optimal solution.
Is there a way to get includeAllDisks to work?

Our shop already has several systems already added to Cacti for monitoring of network utilization.
I was wondering: Is there a way we could use Cacti to track RAM/CPU utilization over time? I have done some cursory searching but couldn't find anything. I'm hoping SF can send me in the right direction.

I am interested in deploying several RHEL 4 Update 8 virtual machines for creation of a test environment.
Here are the steps I am taking:
I am interested in how these processes are done and if there are any options for further customization.
Are the machines brought on the network when they are powered on, before they are reconfigured? Is there a potential IP address conflict?
Is there an option to run additional scripts which reside on the guest as a part of the reconfiguration? For example, restoring an Oracle Database. This is an option with Windows guests and sysprep, but I have been unable to locate anything showing a RHEL equivalent.
I am dealing with a multi tier application. The main issue I am attempting to mitigate is that the application servers reference database servers by hostname and in tnsnames files. I am interested in scripting the reconfiguration of the application in the deployment so that the app/db servers are pointing to the test environment.
I am OK with placing the 'cleanup' script on the source and executing it after the machine has been brought up. I am interested in the automation of the script's execution post clone/boot, as well as if there could be an IP address conflict.

I'm outlining a plan to upgrade four ESX 3.5 U4 hosts to vSphere and I'd like some verification from the community that I'll be able to perform this upgrade with no downtime besides the VMware Tools Upgrades and the VMware Hardware Upgrades.
1) New install of vCenter
We want to change physical machines vCenter is running on. The databases aren't terribly important at the moment, so we're willing to have a fresh start on vCenter 4.0.
Questions: Do I need to add the current ESX 3.5 hosts to this cluster? Do I need to remove them from the existing cluster? Disable HA before doing that?
2) Host Upgrades
Do this for all 4 hosts:
Questions: Can I run a vMotion from an ESX 3.5 host to an ESX 4 host? 3) VM Upgrades
For All VMs, done up to 4 days after the host upgrades (need a weekend for the downtime)
Questions: Does this change the guest MAC address? Will we be OK running without the hardware upgraded for four days?
I'm interested in finding a tool that will show me what processes are eating my CPU cycles overnight.
Problem: We have nagios configured on a Windows XP machine - it alerts high CPU usage almost every night and I am having difficulty tracking down the offending process(es).
I looekd at Process Explorer from sysinternals, but I don't know how I would run this overnight and still have the information I want.
I have several databases on a server. This is the only database backup that fails.
It fails from maintenance plans (full backup and transaction log backups)
It fails from T-SQL BACKUP commands.

I can write the database backup to a UNC path off the server.

Our routine maintenance requires services have to be brought down.
The problem is these services have Nagios checks and we either have to go to the web interface and disable the check or get the emails.
Is there a way from command line on a Windows and/or Linux guest to disable the Nagios check (or notifications) and enable it? Ideally this would happen on the machine we are performing the maintenance on, not the Nagios server itself.
I would like to disable notifications/checks pre-maintenance and re-enable them post maintenance.
Is there a line I can add to my login scripts or something with GPO to prevent the "Manage Your Server" screen from showing up when I log in to a Windows 2003 Server?
