I am trying to upgrade the iDRAC on my PowerEdge R710 but am unable to login to the Web Interface.
After I enter the admin login and password in the web UI, it thinks about it for a while, and returns me back to the login screen.
I am able to connect through SSH though. I've already tried resetting the iDRAC and changing the admin password.
The RAC log (racadm getraclog) seems to show a successful login.
iDRAC 6 on a PowerEdge R710
I have a Dell PowerEdge R710 with dual Intel Xeon E5503 CPUs. It has 96GB(12x8GB) of ECC DIMMs. In its BIOS, memory is configured for "Advanced ECC".
My question is if my DIMMs are already ECC, does it make sense to enable this "Advanced ECC" mode in BIOS or should I switch to "Optimized"?
Dell describes these modes as such:
Advanced ECC Mode This mode uses two MCHs and “ties” them together to emulate a 128-bit data bus DIMM. This is primarily used to achieve a Single Device Data Correction (SDDC) for DIMMs based on x8 DRAM technology. SDDC is supported with x4 based DIMMs in every memory mode. One MCH is completely un-utilized, and any memory installed in this channel will generate a warning message during POST.
Memory Optimized Mode In this mode, the MCHs run independently of each other; for example, one can be idle, one can be performing a write operation, and the other can be preparing for a read operation. Memory may be installed in one, two, or three channels. To fully realize the performance benefit of the memory optimized mode, all three channels per CPU should be populated. This implies that some ‘atypical’ memory configurations, such as 3GB, 6GB, or 12GB, will yield the best performance. This is the recommended mode unless specific RAS features are needed.
I have a system running a financial trading application at a remote facility. I do not have access to the ILO/DRAC, but need to disable hyperthreading. The system runs Intel Westmere 3.33GHz X5680 hex-core CPUs. I can reboot, but want to make sure that the system does not enable hyperthreading due to performance problems. Is there a clean way to do this from within Linux?
Edit: The noht directive added to the kernel boot command line did not work. Same for RHEL.
I have a Dell PowerEdge server with iDRAC6 Express and a PERC 6/iR (LSI 1068e) SAS RAID Controller.
I'm a bit confused about what this means.
Is it possible to login remotely to change bios/RAID configuration?
If this is not possible what can the express version do?
I'm using Ubuntu. Is it possible to setup the RAID from within the operating system, without the annoying reboot?
Alright, so I want to start leveraging my SAN a little more than I have been, and at the same time, take advantage of ESXi.
Currently, I've got an array of Dell PowerEdge 1955 blades connected to a single-enclosure EMC AX4-5 FC storage array. I'm essentially using the SAN as DAS. I've got LUNs on the SAN that are pointing at specific physical machines, and those machines utilize the LUNs for whatever (mostly databases and Samba/NFS shares, depending on the target server).
I've got multiple physical file servers, and each one has a samba config setup to serve the appropriate shares. Since I never got RHCS to work, only one of the file servers has the LUNs mounted at a time. In the event that a fileserver dies, I fence it manually (either by unmounting and unpresenting the drive, using the navisphere utility, or by killing the power via DRAC) then use the navisphere utility to bring up the presented LUNs on the next contender (after which, start apache and the other daemons). All by hand, right now.
I feel sort off like Ferris Bueller playing the clarinet. Never had a lesson!
Anyway, I'm trying to improve. What I want to do is install ESXi on the physical hosts, then create LUNs to hold two fileserver images (in case one gets corrupt/fubar), one of which will be the active, the other will be the standby. At least this way, I don't improve the automation (although I'll get around to writing a script to switch the "active" server at some point soon), but I feel like I'm adding flexibility, plus I can use the ESXi hosts to hold other VMs, and the hardware won't be wasted, like it is now.
My questions are:
1) How stupid is my plan?
2) When it comes to the actual implementation, should I create a normal vmdk image on the LUN, or should I give it a "raw" partition (if that's even possible with ESXi?)
3) Is there a "good" way to use non-clustered fileservers?
