I have a funny problem with Internet Explorer 8 where I set up a proxy server under Tools - Internet Options - Connections - LAN Settings - Proxy Server and IE basically ignores it.
For example, if I set up the proxy server to use (Random IP here) 245.245.245.245:80 and then go to a website such as whatismyip.com, it still shows my ip instead of the ip of the proxy.
To add further confusion, this only happens sometimes(!!)

What I have figured out is this:
GP:
User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Internet Explorer -> Internet Control Panel -> Site to Zone Assignment list.
If I enable it, and add a site with the value 2, All my users gets this in their settings as allowed.
Problem is that this deletes all users previous zone settings.
Anyone have any idea on how I can avoid this?
We are running Active directory on Windows Server 2008 R2. All servers and desktops are Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2.
Is it possible to create a policy using GPO such that every account in an OU will have a certain set of Folder Option settings (Windows Explorer) set automatically and consistently whenever users in the OU log into any computer on the domain?
Basically, I want "Show Hidden files, folder and drives" enabled, fire extensions and hidden files visible on all machines automatically on all machines and we want to achieve this without using roaming profiles
Any ideas?
I have an odd problem. I have a farm of 8 Citrix terminal servers, running Server 2003 Std x86. The hardware on all servers is identical and all servers were built from the same image. Late last week, one the servers started having a problem where any file, when opened by double-clicking, seems to lock explorer.exe for about 2 minutes (I've timed it multiple times, anywhere from 2:09 to 2:40) after which point the file eventually opens. The file can be .txt, .doc, .xls, .jpg, etc. HOWEVER, if I open the required program first (notepad, Excel, whatever) and go to File/Open the file opens without incident.
I've tried running ProcessMonitor while the explorer 'lock' is occurring and I can't find a smoking gun (it's possible that it's there, but with 18,000+ lines it'll take a while to track it down even using filters).
I've started the server in Safe Mode and files open normally (without the lock). Subsequently I've tried stopping every service I can (while started normally) without success.
I've uninstalled AV (Symantec EAP 11) without any positive impact. The event logs are clean and none of the other servers are experiencing this problem.
Does anyone have any thoughts?

While browsing folders in explorer over a remote desktop connection, sometimes the file name strings will get corrupted, so they display incorrectly in windows explorer.
Remote desktop (or terminal services) must have some kind of graphical cache for strings, which is being corrupted for particular strings almost at random, especially file names in windows explorer.
I can't reproduce the error on-demand, but once it occurs, you can copy the file name string and paste it other places in explorer, such as the address bar, the "run" dialog, etc... and that exact string will be corrupted there as well. If you type out the string by hand, it also becomes corrupted as soon as you add the final character, even if you type the first part of the string, the last part, and finish by adding the final character... the end result is that once the corrupted string is reestablished, the visual display is wrong (it goes blank, or has the wrong characters).
It's purely a visual defect. I can still edit the string. If I remove a character, the entire string displays fine (because it's a different string). If I add a different character, it also displays fine, but as soon as I add the original character, restoring the original (corrupted) string, the display of the string is either blank or garbled.
Who can this be reported to.. it's clearly a nasty bug.
EDIT: A corrupted string seems to manifest itself visually by being replaced with strings from file property dialogs, such as ID strings, words like "Permission" or "Allow", and file paths; perhaps the bug has something to do with displaying file property windows.
EDIT: Added Image Below. If I resize the separator, the strings will change (they end in "...", so it's a different, uncorrupted string, which displays fine. Actually, you can't even capture this as a full-screen image from within remote desktop, because it comes back without the display glitches! Only by restoring the remote desktop window to a window-ized state, and taking a picture of the client desktop with the remote desktop window open is it possible to see this corruption... so perhaps its a client string-rendering issue.
