Ive requested the carpet to be removed from my server room, a disaster was almost waiting to happen air con leaked and the carpet UNDER the rack was soaked. (air con unit 0.3 meter from rear of servers)
They have asked if we can have some sort of lining thrown over the carpet as it is a rented building.
If so what material or other recommendations do you have?
I just ran rm -rf /* accidentally, but I meant rm -rf ./* (notice the star after the slash).
alias rm='rm -i' and --preserve-root by default didn't save me, so are there any automatic safeguards for this?
I wasn't root and cancelled the command immediately, but there were some relaxed permissions somewhere or something because I noticed that my Bash prompt broke already. I don't want to rely on permissions and not being root (I could make the same mistake with sudo), and I don't want to hunt for mysterious bugs because of one missing file somewhere in the system, so, backups and sudo are good, but I would like something better for this specific case.
About thinking twice and using the brain. I am using it actually! But I'm using it to solve some complex programming task involving 10 different things. I'm immersed in this task deeply enough, there isn't any brain power left for checking flags and paths, I don't even think in terms of commands and arguments, I think in terms of actions like 'empty current dir', different part of my brain translates them to commands and sometimes it makes mistakes. I want the computer to correct them, at least the dangerous ones.

What I do is legal in every country on earth, but some people don't like it, and make it so tough on my poor ISPs that I am forced to go looking for new providers more often than I would like.
The only option I know of for somebody in my position is called "bulletproof hosting" (think wikileaks) and it isn't cheap.
The only thing that makes bulletproof hosting expensive, or anything different than typical hosting, is their legal stance when responding to "abuse" complaints via email. Your typical host will get fed-up after 5 or 10 no matter what the reason, and a bulletproof host will take the time to look through the legality of the matter and make a decision based on that.
As far as I know, these abuse emails are directly tied to the ip address on which their server sits, because they "own" that ip address and have the ability to lease it out to me on my expensive bulletproof server.
If I could answer them personally, I would save another company the trouble and hopefully save myself some money along the way.
How can I become the bulletproof host? Just rent out a room in my local DC and ask where to get the IPs from?
P.S. No... just because I know this will be the first question everyone asks - I am not some spammer or rule 34 pornographer, what I do is legal in every country. I said "think wikileaks"!

Unsure if this is the correct forum. Anyhow, we have had a network installed, using shielded cat 5 cable.
This cable is in the same trunking as the mains power cable.
The electrician says this is fine. The network man says its not.
Who is correct?

Is there any kind of tool to assist in loading an unloading servers? I realized that I lack both height and upper body strength to remove servers from the upper tiers of a rack? I could not find the name or type of equipment that folks are using to do this kind of work safely?
In this video can I see that they use a dedicated "server lift" http://www.racklift.com/RackLift-Demo-Video.html which looks quite expensive until you consider the cost of what your lifting.
Does anyone know of cheap server lifts or other tools that can be used for this?
